Silkie thread!

Well my boy is only 5 mths old and he was learning to do the deed with my white girl who had just started laying that week. Well I sold her that week she started laying so she laid an egg that day she was picked up so I put it in the bator with some other eggs and it is developing can you believe that? I don't know if it will make it as the egg is small but we will see next week.

I now have him separated from the others as they are only 3-4 mth olds and he won't leave them alone...horny little bugger for only 5 mth old!

I have also had this happen though eventually mine died eventually after about a year of her being fine and then having wry neck that disoriented her so much that she would flop, I tried everything including propping her in a towel with food and water close by but in the end she began scratching her neck, so i then had to clip and restrain her feet so she could move but not scratch or so i though but eventually she cut her thoat open and died.

Chris, does your bird have a vaulted skull? They seem to be much more prone to head injuries due to the exposed brain being only covered with skin. I have a Blue Partridge pullet that got pecked hard on the top of her head by a rather excited male. No blood, but within a few hours, she showed up with the symptoms of wry neck (head/neck twisted upside down). I went the vitamin route with her for about a week with no improvement. The weather had been warm for the week, then came a cold snap. She was still outside with the others, as she would eat and drink fine, and would only display the wry when she got stressed or excited, once calm her neck straightened out again. When the cold hit, she really improved, leading me to believe that there was a definate swelling of the brain, and the cold weather took down the swelling. Just speculation on my part, but it makes sense. She is still alive and well, but every once in awhile, she will go wry on me again for just a few minutes. I would say by now, being that it's been several months ago that this happened, it is a permanent condition due to the brain trauma, but otherwise, she is fine. Hope this may help you some, good luck with your bird.

Oh no. So I have a long time to worry. Sigh. So sorry you lost yours. Did you see how hard it was - the peck? Did he have a violent reaction like mine? Dropped, flailed, neck down briefly with beak
open. He was pretty much limp and I was certain he was gone. Sorry to be graphic, but this might help others too. If my bird survives this, then nothing could happen in a shipping
box that should kill a bird...correct? Wondering if head trauma truly is a shipping issue or if it may be like another suggested - mites, stress, etc. I haven't had chickens long, but I
would think integration into a new flock or even just being misplaced somewhere new without the old flock would be very hard on a bird. And then if there were an underlying minor health issue that could escalate as well. Just thinking....I may want to ship in some birds. Any thoughts?

I didn't see it when it happened the last time but my male kept pecking her in the head, at the time i didn't relize it was dangerous until she began to act strange, it was then that i removed her and gave her her own space along with vit b and selenium she eventually improved but every once in a while began to do it again especially when stressed, it gradually got worse with the flopping and thing moved along as i said before but ii'm not sure how long after the initial injury that she started to show symptoms. I just know that she had no other problems and the vit b didn't seem to help. I'm so sorry about your bird and hope all is well

I've never shipped chickens or had them shipped to me but I find any kind of stress makes them more susceptable to problems and if i have to do anything to stressfull I try to put suppliments in their water to keep them healthy

I have read differing opinions on how to keep the feathers around their eyes so they can see, I have read that some pluck and some trim? Is one better than the other, I do not want to hurt silkie so I am leaning more towards trimming?
