Silkie thread!

Looks like I am the rooster hatching queen again thought my ears were playing a trick on me Tuesday morning sounded like a tiny crow. Told myself must have been some other sound and I was just imagining it they are still babies well this morning I am feeding and watering the babies I am talking 8 week old Silkies and one of them crows right in front of me stance and little wings spread and flapping. I don't want to keep buying eggs and hatching Roos

Chicken Math attacked me last year. I moved to the country and had my father in law and husband build me a chicken coop. I bought a variety of large breeds for egg laying and then I discovered the joys of incubating. I was researching chicken breeds and fell in love with the silkies. I still have a couple of my large fowl chickens but the Silkies are my favorites. None of my chickens use their coop but this weekend I am making the silkies use it. They have been free ranging but they are too slow and delicate to keep doign that. Besides I am tired of having to remove silkies from underneath my car everytime I need to go somewhere at night. :D

I am getting them from Elite Silkies in Durant, Oklahoma www.elitesilkies.com. They are so pretty. She breeds for show I think, but I just want some fluffy bearded beauties. :) She has a pair on the Salmon Project page that I would like to get too but I can't really afford them right now. I will post some pictures of them when I get them settled in.

It wouldn't be so bad if they were easy to rehome. But actually a really good roo is very hard to find! Maybe it's a super guy!

You're right I wish they were easy to rehome you can't even give them away.
He is a porcelain wouldn't you know he was the only one of the porcelain eggs to hatch so I won't have any girls. I also hatched one paint that I also think is a Roo. I really hope the others are girls.

No, Hawkeye95, I am picking them up. She is only about an hour from where I live. One of the hens is broody right now so I will probably get her settled in and see if she will set some eggs for me. I was super excited to find her because I have been looking for weeks. I already have plans to go out and buy cat litter boxes for nesting boxes. I have nesting boxes but they are up a ramp and I don't know if they will use it. :)

Hawkeye, you are welcome and I'm so glad the ear thermometer worked for you! Here's hoping the rest of the incubation goes smoothly and you're hatching chicks in no time!!!

You guys are making me jealous with your talk of broody hens. I had a hen who tried to go broody on nothing but straw a few weeks ago. It took several days but I talked her out of it, and after a couple weeks she started laying again but not as well as before this attempt to raise straw babies. So, since I ended up with a random hatching this weekend of only two eggs and also have company staying with me, I thought it would be nice to let her raise these two, and tried to get her to go broody again. I gave her a whole pile of more than a dozen infertile eggs and the same box she'd gone broody in before--and nothing. Wasn't having any of it. The last several days I tried this, even leaving her alone in the coop for awhile with every one else out or temporarily shutting her in the box for a little while. Nope. Tonight I have to put the two chicks into lockdown, so I've got the hatching bator set up. And I guess I know better than to try and magic myself a broody hen in future!
