Silkie thread!

That is what I thought too! I'm getting better!

Looks splash partridge to me...

Could I ask a quick question on wing feathers? Is it typical or a fault to have "shredded type" feathers coming in on the chicks rather than "fuzzy" feathers? These are the long flight feathers. If it is a fault, to what degree. I don't have a copy of the APA standard to reference, only the one on the American Silkie Bantam site which doesn't refer to faults/DQs.

I'm just starting ro raise silkies with an eye to what is right as opposed to just pet chickens and still have lots to learn.

Have a bird I am not sure about - hatched a light chipmunk. Very light, like a white chick with a couple of chipmunk
spots. Pretty bird but very light eyes, any idea whats going on here?

Very pretty.

I'm still trying to figure out the chicken genetics but it looks like there might be columbian/wheaten genes and possibly a single recessive white that is lightening it up; either that or a dilution gene. It is definitely a lightened version of something - maybe partridge? What did the parents look like? I don't think it is porcelain as those (at least as I understand it) have lavender and buff.

Candling eggs? What's the best way to do this and what do I look for? What's a good sign and what's a bad sign? I have never done this before.
We're planning on hatcing some silkie eggs here at the farm sometime soon. They will be random colors out of some white and black hens, possibly gray and some sort of a partridge lookalike if those two girls are laying, not sure yet. Just pet quality, but we're excited. The hatching process will be a school project for one of our staff members autistic son, which makes it even more exciting. :D
I would like to try candling some of the eggs this time to make sure we get something for the young man. :) Eggs will be under a hen.

This is my favorite candling reference. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...g-candling-pics-progression-though-incubation

The big thing when you are learning is don't toss any egg that you are not absolutely sure has quit or blood ring, or something else. Egg explosions are rare and they smell bad before they explode!
