Silkie thread!

There is a self-blue (lavender) thread and a porcelain thread. Both might be helpful to you. Let me know if you want the links and I'll track them down for you.

Links would be very much appreciated. I will try to hunt the topics down myself after work. If I can't find them, I'll come asking for help! :)

Most breeders prefer to keep blue and lav genes separate rather than one bird carrying both.
agreed. If you decided to outbreed lavender do so with Black not blue. anytime you get 'splits' (lavender to black) the black offspring you can't visibly tell if they will produce lavender or not, so it can be a bit difficult with a breeding program.

What does the split lavender mean exactly? Other than a lavender bred to a black?

The roo is really nice. He came from Sunshine Silkies in Fla., but the hen looks a little scarfy to me. Silkies are new to me so not sure what to look for, but I've definitely seen nicer hens. She mentioned good wingset and cushion, but I have no.idea what that means.

Split to lav mean it carries the lav recessive gene(s). Black split to lav means a black bird carrying lav. I am familiar with genetics in other species, "split to" was a new one for me too. Its a chicken thing I guess;-)

Fifty sounds pretty cheap to me, and if the roo looks better than the hen I'd look elsewhere unless its just a super-looking roo. For a show quality pair, I'd say two hundred or up sounds right. I've seen hens alone go for more than that. You might want to read through the silkie threads, look at breeder websites, join the asbc etc., to get an idea of what is correct and what you like.

Good morning ladies and gents,
Can anyone tell me what's a fair price for a pair of show quality black silkies? The lady wants $50 for them. Is that too steep or about right?

I paid about that (a bit more) for mine. That is a REALLY good deal... I'd be wanting to make sure they are show quality. Have her send you a picture of their wings, feet and over all look.

ETA--- WAIT-- do you mean $50 for the PAIR? Or for each bird? I paid $50 for each bird... that didn't include shipping. I was pretty happy with my deal. :)

(btw-- I got such a good deal because it was the end of the season--start of Fall and she had a LOT of young birds to get rid of) Might want to look for deals like that, too.

If that is the case-- keep looking! No way would I buy a bird that was "ify" looking! There's just no point in it if you plan on breeding and showing. We are currently showing and 'trying' to breed. I got a great deal on my birds. Expect to pay at least $50-100 for a single bird.

Congrats on chicks everyone! And Hawkeye...will check for updates!
Here is one of my cute little fluffballs from Geri Godina....five weeks and all that fluff.
She sent some VERY pretty babies!

Actually I would be a bit cautious of that price, because its LOW. I've seen SQ pullets of different colors go for 100-200$ and roosters go for nearly as much, I've seen a pair of outstanding 6-8 month old SQ blacks go for 250$ dollars. if they were asking 50$ a piece I'd not be too concerned, I just sold a BQ pair of birds for 50$ only because its so hard to sell locally where I am without shipping...

I would definitely do your research on what to look for in the birds before you pick them up, if your getting them shipped I'd ask for pictures of the heads, profile shot, wings, and feet.

Split means that 1 color has been bred to another in most cases black. If you breed lavender to black some of the (plain black to lavender i think all offspring will be black) some will carry the lavender gene and be "Split" meaning when bred BACK to Lavender or to each other (Split X Split) you will get some lavender offspring. to get Lavender you have to have two copies of the color gene - coming from each parent. So some chicks will get 1 copy of the gene - those are Splits and some will get two copies of the gene and they will visibly be Lavender in color and Split to Split or Split to lavender some chicks will get no lavender gene and will just be black.

Does that make sense?

Doesn't Geri have some nice birds? Yours are gorgeous. I just got 3 from her. An outstanding 2 1/2 yr old splash roo and 2 stunning blue pullets. I couldn't be happier if I were twins! Here are two of mine:
