Oooooh so are yours! Thank you! Love looking at silkie pics. Going to my first show this weekend and I can't wait!!

Doesn't Geri have some nice birds? Yours are gorgeous. I just got 3 from her. An outstanding 2 1/2 yr old splash roo and 2 stunning blue pullets. I couldn't be happier if I were twins! Here are two of mine:

I have a little silkie chick that is 5 days old. I am trying to determine if it will be a buff. I keep taking pics of it, but they all turn out making the chick look white. I only have the camera on my phone, and the color quality is not good enough to get the true color of this chick, so my question is ...... do all chicks that start out yellowy turn into white chickens? The chick is a yellowy beige, not really straight yellow.
I have 4 leghorns that started out yellow, now as their feathers are coming in, they are white.
Is it the same for silkies?
I was hoping this would be a buff (reason I bought it), as I already have a white, but that chick was a little older when i got it, and no yellow at all.

well, I tried to take a picture of my two... but my camera is not the best.



Buff on the left, white on the right. They are darker in person and the white is yellowish. These little ones are 7 days old.

yes my silkie roo does this sort of 'scream/screech/calling out' noise if he sees something 'unusual' and thinks he has to alert everyone....also my silkies and chickens will make a 'growl' noise if they see a hawk or something 'dangerous'....so my guess is that you have a little beautiful boy on your hands....

Yeah Nugget is VERY vocal. LOL Since day one I've had a strong feeling that Nugget is a boy, which is ok. I don't mind. I'll probably be bringing him in at night to keep covered so the crowing doesn't bother my neighbors. Does that actually work? Covering them? My daughter's friend said that's what they do with their rooster. Well, I have 6 chickens and so far Nugget is the only possible boy... Hmmm wonder what kind of babies I'll get if he breeds with my two Frizzle?...

Yeah Nugget is VERY vocal. LOL Since day one I've had a strong feeling that Nugget is a boy, which is ok. I don't mind. I'll probably be bringing him in at night to keep covered so the crowing doesn't bother my neighbors. Does that actually work? Covering them? My daughter's friend said that's what they do with their rooster. Well, I have 6 chickens and so far Nugget is the only possible boy... Hmmm wonder what kind of babies I'll get if he breeds with my two Frizzle?...

Well, it's not so much the night you have to worry about as far as him crowing. Once my Silkies go to bed, I don't hear the roos until morning. Now if you are trying to prevent early morning crowing, that may stifle what the neighbors hear, but my little guys crow all day long! Now with my Marans, if I turn a light on IN the house at 3am, those boys start to crow!

I think I need YOUR Silkies to explain a thing or two to my Elliot!!! He is the KING of crowing. Goes off anytime of the day or night (I don't believe he's ever missed a night!) and usually manages to wake ALL the other boys up and get them going too. Maybe because he grew up with Marans - they taught him bad habits!!!!!!

(He was not a particularly noisy chick. He started to crow at 11 weeks and has been ALL male ever since.)

My little ones just let the "big boys" take over the night duty; but they sure make up for that loooong silence come daylight! It's a good thing I don't have close neighbors!!

I'm not worried about day time crowing. We are allowed to have chickens where I'm at even though the houses are about 20 ft a part. LOL I just told my neighbor that I'd try to keep them from crowing too early. Although I don't see what's the big deal since she allows her dogs to bark 24/7. lol You can hear in the early morning the other Roosters in the neighborhood but I've never noticed them during the day.
