Silkie thread!

At what age does a Silkie start laying? I have one that is a little over 6 months old and nothing yet. I know that she is a hen. I have 3 in a coop together. they are all the same age and the other 2 are crowing. I guess I am just being to impatient.......

Mine started at about 8-9 months.

I agree with the backseat driver bit

Not to mention it does sound like a vaulted head. So no worries there. I have 6 just like that, I just pulled from the incubator.

My kids tend to do the strange and unusual too! I think it's the breed. Right now I have a 3 week old baby out in the pen with his/hers fellow hatch mates. Bird was fine until today. Then I looked and I thought he was dead. Had that whole flattened out thing going on. Then I went to pick him up and darn if he's not only alive but still doing his funky little flat self. He's alert. Eats, drinks and just prefers NOW to lay out like he's on the beach. What in the world is this about?

Ive had some other things happen, but I can't think of them. But my bird is acting weird.

Send a picture, I want to see the little monkey!
I had this weird little hen I called Mo. I think she used to get seizures or something. It would all start out by her walk getting really wobbly and she couldn't walk a straight line. Then she'd sit down and all of a sudden flop on her back, turn her neck over her back and start flapping her wings like crazy. I even picked her up a couple of times when she was doing this hoping it'd "wake her up" but it didn't. I have no idea what caused all this. She was always just weird, we called her the Weirdo Mo. lol But she was the cutest little hen. Until the chicken hawk got her.

She never laid any eggs either.
Maybe, just like with people, chickens are hatched sometimes with some parts missing upstairs? lol

how many eggs do your silkies lay weekly??? (on average) thanks
We pretty much get one egg per day out of each hen. The younger hens might not lay every day, but the more mature girls seem to. Right now they're all way too busy sitting on their eggs so we're getting ZERO eggs! lol Every single hen went broody, except for the 2 that are too young to know any better. The poor girls are looking pretty confused because their girlfriends are not coming out to play so they're hanging out with the roosters. lol

Sounds like a vitamin deficiency she had. I bet some Vitamin E might have cleared that up. I like to give powder probiotics as a top dressing in their feed now and then to keep them balanced-- it is for goats and it has a lot of great vitamins in it, including Vit E. I bought it at TSC, it comes in a tub for $11. Totally worth it. I know a lot of people buy the Vit E capsules and break those open and give it to their birds that are having troubles like you described. But yeah, pretty sure that wasn't seizures she was having, or at least, not what you were thinking. Sorry she was taken by a hawk, that is sad.

I had a hen like that and I tried Vitamin E but it didn't work for her so the only thing we came up with was she was being pecked in the head. Because she got better a couple on months after being separated from the other chickens but as soon as we put her back in with the others she began doing it again but this time she didn't get any better and she eventually died

Just ordered a dozen silkie eggs to slip under my broody silkie - hoping to have silkie chicks in 21 days or so! She has eggs under her now - but they weren't fertilized by my silkie roo (not his fault - he couldn't get close to her). So I'll do a switch once the new eggs get here. Probably let her sit on half and put the other half in the bator.
