Silkie thread!

Hey ScaredofShadows....I told you I had a girl that looked like your 'Orange Sherbet' boy...this little girl is only 2 months old...I think 'Sherbet' is a good name for her as well...can I steal it from you?

sorry +not the best pics as I was taking them from above in their pen after I gave them some clumps of grass...

and here is my favorite little guy at the moment...when he was a fluffy chick I thought he was a paint at first as he was black and white spotted...but he is an awesome looking splash...

Oh, Wow! Your sherbert looks like a girl. You gotta' get those two sherberts together!

Quote: Jenny laid a new egg so now there are 6 eggs total in the basket. I put the date on the new one since she got up to eat...will she continue to lay more eggs ? know they can sit on atleast 10...peaches by the way is sitting by the basket watching the eggs now that henny is out....

It would be just my luck... So if by chance anything hatches i'm expecting small plymonths? Normal feathers right?
And with nugget being a sizzle with silkie feathers I'd get fuzzy silkie feathers?

How many fertizle eggs with they lay? When will I be able to eat eggs again lol

Apart of me is thinking to go out and buy an incubator and set them just to see... I'm so anxious to know.... But just worry bout them laying more that would then have to be incubated too... Suggestions ?
I don't know how you guys who hatch eggs do it .... So much time to wait lol I can already see myself pulling my hair out anticipation .
It could be worse, look up incubation time for emu.

Once they go broody and start setting, they will not lay until after they finish raising their clutch: 3 weeks of brooding, then another 4-6 weeks of raising the chicklets.

Type will be inbetween that of rocks and silkies, probably softer, fuller feathers, but not silkied. The rocks are barred? If so, all barred offspring will be males.
Lol I'll tell myself that every time I find myself to anxious :) Nugget laid another egg today which suprised me since she was laying everyother day and she laid yesterday... So got 3 of her eggs and 4of hennys .... O yeah and she took over the nest when henny was out eatting... I also found some of her feathers in the basket.... Sign of going broody? O about the barring... My Plymouth hen is a barred... So if any of her chicks if they hatch are barred they are boys if I understand correctly? Why is that may I ask?

Seriously too cute!!

Sana, yours are adorable, too!!

Thanks guys!

I am so excited to watch the first chicks I bred and raised myself. This little guy is 5 weeks now and his daddy has super foot feathering but I am getting lots of chicks with even better foot feathering! Good job, Dad!

Beautiful! Wish I had chickens like that.

My chick HATCHED today!!!

It must have hatched about an hour ago. We ran into town and it had just poked a hole through. This one has the same size vault as the last one I hatched from my pair. Geez-- they look crazy huge. I'm soooo excited! I can't see the toes, I'm anxious to see if I get the missing toe nail with this one too. This is also the egg I jumped the gun on, so it'll be two more days before the rest hatch. Here it is in my Brinsea:

Congrats!!

Apple Cider Vinegar
Someone suggested to mix apple cider vinegar in water for my sneezing hen, forgot who that was.
What is a good/safe amount to add in the water? Is it good to give to all the chickens, my couple day old chicks included?
Oh, and should this be done on a regular basis?

Somewhere I read it should be unfiltered, not filtered. Why does this make a difference? I went and bought a bottle of Cider Vinegar, Big Y brand. Says diluted with water to 5% acidity. Does this mean anything? Ingredients are pure apple cider, vinegar and filtered water.

No, this isn't the stuff you want. It won't hurt anything but it won't help either. What you want is raw, unfiltered ACV and somewhere on the bottle it should say something like "with The Mother". That other stuff is basically just apple cider FLAVORED vinegar.

Yes that's right...you'll want ACV with Mother...you can find it at Kroger in the organic isles....

You can call your baby Sherbert - lol I don't mind.
BUT i will warn you that is EXACTLY how my Sherb looked, nice pretty round crest, etc til he hit about 4.5 months and started getting streamers and the wings started to darken. So at 2 months I would not get comfortable thinking thats a girl....

Not necessarily. Although as she lists the label, it is confusing, and might not be real ACV. I get apple cider vinegar, filtered and without the mother and it works just as well as the more expensive organic version with the mother. If it is not made from apples, or if it says FLAVOURED, it is not the real stuff. Virtually all vinegar is diluted to 5% acidity.

The acidity is a part of what is helpful; but the nutrients from the apples are also key.
