Well, I am just sick. I had a chick hatching just a few minutes ago. It was zipping and working it's way around the egg and chirping. I was doing other things and kept coming back to watch. I left it too long and came back and realized it was no longer moving. I grabbed it out and peeled it back and it had already suffocated and died! I'm sooooo upset! It was a BLACK which I really, really wanted. It was one of my own chicks, and it had perfect feet, too. In fact, the extra toes on each foot had amazing separation. I know, I'm sick, I popped it out of the shell, tried to rub it to stimulate it and then when I realized it was gone, checked it over. The membrane was stuck on it. It must have sealed up and suffocated it. I wish I had caught it sooner. No blood, no nothing, just slid right out when I peeled it back.

Here are my 3 week old Silkie chicks making it obvious that they are boys! Apparently some are easier to sex early than others!!!

Is this a common thing with Silkies??? I've never seen this sort of fighting with any of my large fowl. Not even the early crowers were this determined.

My chicks do this too i think there making there pecking order but mine are 8 weeks old
action shot!!

I wrote a week or so ago asking about non-fertility in my cockerels. Someone suggeted cutting back the "fluff" around the cockerels "manly" parts...

Well, I went & took a look at 2 of the boys, and sure enough, both had large matted feather clumps right in front. I guess that prevented him from consumating and probably each time they tried, it just added to the "gunky blob".

So, I carefully cut the chunks away a couple of days ago, and today I cracked open fertilized eggs. Yes, those eggs were wasted, but if they weren't I would be wasting space in my incubator...

Thanks for the information....

WOW!! I've never seen anything like that-- where they just go at it and don't give up! They are going for big mouthful's of feathers! Darn birds! I don't know, but I'd bet money on the both of them being boys. I've had girls chest bump and fly up feet first, but that's about it. Nothing like that!
