Silkie thread!

Okay okay.. All the blue and black talk is hurting my head...:/ how do you know if you got a TRUE black? An obvious black if you don't know what the parents were?

And what's the difference between a buff and a red buff?

Hello everyone. I have been posting in threads all day about the chickens I have. I have 2 silkies. We had a lot of trouble with one of the little birds, but it is doing much better now. The little guy just wouldn't grow. Here are some of the photos. If you want to tell me if you think roo or pullet that would be great!

These 2 were born at the same time, I have had them since they were 1 week old. This photo was taken 2 weeks ago. They would be about 3-4 weeks old here.

Here is Einstein today. At 7-8 weeks old.

Here is scrambled today. I will try and get a better shot tonight when my husband gets home. Its tough to get a 2 year old to sit still. Especially a 2 year old and a chicken!

Well, I am just sick. I had a chick hatching just a few minutes ago. It was zipping and working it's way around the egg and chirping. I was doing other things and kept coming back to watch. I left it too long and came back and realized it was no longer moving. I grabbed it out and peeled it back and it had already suffocated and died! I'm sooooo upset! It was a BLACK which I really, really wanted. It was one of my own chicks, and it had perfect feet, too. In fact, the extra toes on each foot had amazing separation. I know, I'm sick, I popped it out of the shell, tried to rub it to stimulate it and then when I realized it was gone, checked it over. The membrane was stuck on it. It must have sealed up and suffocated it. I wish I had caught it sooner. No blood, no nothing, just slid right out when I peeled it back.

Oh! I am so, so sorry Hawkeye! That is one of the most heartbreaking feelings in the world, and I'm sure that most of us have had it happen before - we totally get it. So sorry for your loss

I have two hatchery-quality roosters (white silkies) and they barely have any blue on their ear lobes. I'd never breed them, but I have wondered why they don't have blue earlobes since it is such a silkie trade mark.

I am going to candle those eggs as soon as this chick hatches! LOL Probably tonight. I sure hope I see some growth! They've been in for 4 days now. I should be able to see something in them! :)
I can usually tell at 4 days if the shells aren't grainy. That's funny are your hatchery silkies. The bright blue ear lobes were the best part of mine!

OMG!! That is the tinyest silkie I have ever seen! I'm surprised it survived. Cute pictures! Einstein is lovely. Very young but I would "guess" girl.

I think you can only really tell by breeding them. If you breed your black/blue(?) to a splash and you get any splash babies the birl in question is blue.

The way the Blue gene works in a breeding can be broken down as follows:
1) Blue x Blue: This will produce 25% black, 50% blue, 25% splash.
2) Black x Blue: Produces 50% black and 50% blue.
3) Black x Splash: You'll get 100% blue.
4) Blue x Splash: Produces 50% blue and 50% splash.
5) Splash x Splash: This will give you 100% Splash.

Red buff is a very dark buff that borders on red. The photo is a PQ red buff cockerel I once owned.

Peepblessed, I really hope she is a girl. The other little sizzle has lots of bumps and a little bigger comb. Again, when my hubby gets home I will try and get still clear photos of the tiny silkie!

Hope I'm not giving you false hope. It's really way too early. I go so much be behavior at this age. My girls usually start to get less active between 7 and 10 weeks. But I have a 7 week old boy right now that is really quiet. His comb is a dead giveaway though!
