Silkie thread!

Yup, if you're not planning to show her then you can trim around the eyes a tiny bit but if she has a beard it's most likely the beard that is giving her trouble. Same with the rear feathers-if they get dirty again trim those too.

I love my silkies. I would like a silver plated partridge or silver partridge. Does anyone know if there is some chance I could get that from a partridge rooster with either a white or black hen? Do I need to buy a gray or silver chicken? There is a breeder on ebay but he has showgirls in his silver partridge pens. It can get to negative 25 here, so I'd rather not have to worry about that exposed skin. I was wondering if I could breed them with what I have.
The solitary bird, Sophie, asking herself, "Where did all the blueberries go?"

This one I named Baby because she would always be under all the others when they slept in a huddle or in the corner. She was the first I found after a hawk attack got my white roo, Chester (named for the "perfect" cloning chicken in an Eureka episode), she looked like a tiny snowball and didn't move till I had picked her up and looked for signs of life.

She went broody before she even laid eggs, she happily adopted eggs I had hatching in an incubator. I let her see them hatching and she was like, "I want one of those, and one of those, and one of those..." She would call out to any baby chick that made a sound, I had to give them all to her to make her quite. I told her there was way to many of them and still she wanted to try.

I didn't have the heart to tell her she couldn't keep them all...I had to steal some of them back at night. If she saw me or someone else take one from her she jumped out of the box and came chasing after us...I won't ever doubt the mothering abilities of silkies. Well, at least not of Baby's.

I trim around their eyes, so most of them wouldn't look show quality even if they were, and I'm pretty sure they are no where's close to it...yet all are still dearly loved.

I have a question about silkie eggs. I have 2 21 week old pullets. Today I found 2 shell-less eggs on the floor in the middle of the coop

. I think they are the silkies' eggs because the other girls use the upper nest boxes and my other newly-laying non-silkie pullets have been producing nice pullet eggs for 2 weeks at least. I'm baffled because I thought silkies took forever to start to lay. But it must be them. Those 2 are the only goofballs who don't roost or use their nest boxes which I have so nicely set up for them on the floor. It's also weird that I got 2 shell-less eggs in 1 day. Is it possible that those crazy things are already laying?!

Lice and mites are a constant battle.

I totally agree! I treated in Oct/Nov/Dec and looked at one of my white boys with a little dirty spot on the top odf his crest and to my disbelief....mites....I treated 3 months in a row just to be on the safe side and changed the bedding at the same time. Ivermectin on the bird, Sevin in the coops... Thought I would keep a head start on those little buggers...yeah right...

SunshineSilkies, how much ivermectin do you put on an adult silkie? Where do you put it? Is sevin dust harmful to breathe (for the chickens and for ME?) I've changed out bedding and dusted them with DE so far. Is the Sevin dust the kind you get in the garden center for plants?
