Silkie thread!

Well, it's been a while since I posted a picture of my older girl. A whole 13 months old now. Is it still too soon to sex them at this age? I'm not seeing any type of comb coming in yet. Chucks, forgot to look for wattles.

Blue splash, but this camera went with a real blue hue, not sure why. Anyway, I think she is pretty. :))

I have more Silkies in lock down due to hatch tomorrow, a couple have already pipped. Anyway, I want a partridge soo bad! This is a beauty. :) I have three partridge eggs in there..I hope they all hatch!
Post some pics when they hatch! I'm waiting for some bearded whites, blacks, and blues to hatch from Kate Morreale's lines. This is our family project and my 4 year old wants to show, she is so excited for them to hatch!

I know this is probably going to sound stupid and has probably been answered somewhere, but I just hatched out my first silkies. All four are from the same breeder. Three had the big topknot on their head and one doesn't. What is the difference?

Thanks.
I believe the bumps on their head are vaulted skulls, that would be my guess.
Maybe someone who knows better can explain what a vaulted skull is exactly.

Some are vaulted, and some aren't. I like the vaulted..more of a puffy look when they grow out.

Can you explain a bit more with the loose/split wings? Are you meaning the way the wings lay against the body or the two feather types?
I noticed these guys have been slow to get the furry look of a silkie. The top knots were like small for a long time and then just started filling in lately.
Here is an 8 wk old chick. Notice that it's primary wing feathers are all tucked up under the wing and only the ends show? I am not an expert but I believe this is a pretty good wing. It should make a smile.

Here is a page of split wing so you can see what it looks like. http://www.hattricksilkies.net/articles_split_wing.html

I should try it then, it would make my life a lot easier...and drier heads too!
I haven't noticed my silkies but my layers will bump it and let it drip all over their heads. Kinda like a bath or shower. Just their heads get wet but it makes a mess in the coop. I had to move my layer waterer outside because it was getting damp and stinky under it. lol

So, looks like a she? And what about that split wing thing, now I am wondering if she has it..it doesn't sit back flat like the pictures in that link.

Looks like a girl to me. Pretty!
