Silkie thread!

You can't beat the advice on this thread. So many good suggestions. Most of my animal buying selling experience comes from dogs. My parents were breeders and I was raised in the business. My take on pricing is that you get what you pay for. I also believe if you scoff at the price of an animal, you probably can't afford the long term cost of owning the animal. It's a commitment.

  Wow! I give my pets away! $30.00 is what I charge for breeder quality hens. Of course, if you live in CA, everything is more expensive, I know, I used to live there. Here in the sticks, not so much...

Debbi,
I want to say that you are very nice to give away your pet quality silkies! I am sure the folks who received them are very grateful. On this topic of selling and giving away silkies, you all might be interested to know its been very difficult for me to obtain nonhatchery bearded silkies for my handicapped 27yr old daughter.

In my attempts to buy hens... one breeder had hens for sale that had been used for breeding....but they were not hand tame. Another reputable breeder had hens for sale... but took so long to see my reply to her ad.....that she sold them to another buyer. Other breeders that i have contacted either don't reply to my notes or... are all on different timeframes as to when they will be evaluating their younger birds to decide which will be kept vs sold. I don't have the facilities to bring in a new bird or two every few weeks and deal with ongoing quarantines...and then ongoing integration of new birds into a flock.

I had to jump through many hoops and ultimately ended up buying chicks that I picked up in Maryland and Pensylvania. Those two breeders were very kind and I am vey appreciative of their willingness to sell us some BQ stock. Note that i live in NYS about 5-6 hours from those breeders and made special arrangements to pick them up.

My daughter is thrilled with her babies and is hoping to find a few more colors to add to her flock. But, I don't know if I have the energy to drive up and down the east coast to hunt them down! :)

I went on craigslist this morning to see what silkies were available in our huge area. One ad for silkies and it was a wanted ad. I never see any on there that aren't hatchery types. I get 2 or 3 people contacting me each wk. wanting silkies. I rarely have to advertise anything.

Well it seems most of us are in the same boat about finding quality birds. I have a few silkies and would like more in other colors. I've searched high and low here in Missouri. Debbi is my only contact at this point. My search may grow more difficult in a couple of months when I move to Illinois. :(

Hi Peep,

Long time no talk. I've been busy and up and down with health so I haven't been on much lately.

There are many good breeders up Illinois way. Not all of them are on BYC. You should try search different web pages and facebook. You'd be surprised how many of us do not list here but, in other places. However, with that being said you probably won't see too much shipping this time of year as it is way to hot to ship birds

I like many other serious breeders will wait until late summer early fall to list and sell our grow out stock. If you wait till then you will see alot of very nice birds go up for sale. And as Brody said, just because the birds are listed as coming from SQ parent stock, if they are not in show condition at the time of the sale they are not SQ. My idea of buying a good quality silkie is one that a breeder has kept back for possible showing breeding, and when they decide for whatever reason to sell, the bird it is in show ready condition as they would keep it in that condition should they decide to keep it.

I've seen some not so good silkies go for big bucks and just kinda ask myself how experienced is the seller and buyer b/c if they knew their breed they would not spend that kinda of money on that bird! But, I guess some of of us have different outlooks on what is SQ, BQ, or PQ

Again, can't beat the helpfulness/advice from this thread. Thanks for the heads up! I think I'd like to only pick up birds. The juries still out on how I feel about shipping birds.
