Got it.....but, I have no other lavender....

What to do now....

More eggs!!! I'm afraid there is no end when you get several colors. I finally had to narrow my colors down, because if you're raising them then you need one or more pens for every color. Then you find out one color is all males or females. It quickly gets overwhelming. In the short run I will probably keep my lavender and porcelain together. My DH brought one of my porcelain cockerels in to show me yesterday. He is almost 4 months and I hardly recognized him. He is turning out much nicer than I thought! God is good!!

Got another hatch! Little silkie with a vaulted skull looks buff, but still very very wet... Eekk as nerve wrecking as hatching eggs is its soooo much fun.... My niece and my daughter were in aww watching them hatch. 8 more eggs to go.

That sounds like fun. What is a vaulted skull? Is is something you only want in a Silkie or all chickens? Thanks

Oh how awesome to find someone else with blue cuckoo!!

I have one growing out as well along with a regular cuckoo sibling. These two are only a few weeks old. I can't wait till mine gets your size and hoping it's a boy!! The barring is hard to see in full sun but definitely there.

These are about the cutest babies I have ever seen!!! Will their eyes darken as they age, or do they stay this color? Also, do Cuckoo Silkies usually have reader combs? Thanks!

Vaulted skulls are most common in Polish. In fact, I read a while back that a ways back in the history of the silkie, that Polish were bred to silkies to breed the vaulted skull into Silkies. Now a lot of silkies do have vaulted skulls, but not all of them. It's a genetic trait that is not always passed on. And either way, if you have bought into a good line of silkies, a vault won't make a difference (usually) on the size of the crest. Breeders have done such a great job of selection for big crests that a non vaulted bird can have just as large (or larger) a crest as a vaulted bird. The vaults were originally bred into Silkies to get larger crests. Most breeds are not crested, and there for do not have vaults. A lot of crested breeds do have vaults. And breeds like Polish, are pretty much ALWAYS vaulted... unlike silkies, which are not always vaulted. Anyway, hope that helps straighten out your confusion.

BTW, a vault, is a protrusion of the brain through the skull, as shown in my just hatched chick here below:

Yes, isn't that neat!! I discovered that back when we were talking with Silver Silkie. He mentioned it and then that led me to do a bit of research on it to discover when the vaults were bred into silkies. Now, I knew Polish were vaulted-- my dad raised them for years and they have those cute little vaults when hatched. I've never seen a non vaulted Polish. And since their crests are pretty amazing-- much bigger than silkies... I'm sure that got people to thinking "hmmmm" a long time ago and want to breed those vaults into silkies.

Love the foot feathering! I'm noticing some of my chicks are getting some wicked foot feathers. I have no idea where all their feathers came from though. lol None of the parents have the same fluff, they're all pretty much just pet quality birds. lol

Sanna, lavender breed true. But you need Lavender X Lavender. I don't know about porcelian, though. I don't work with them, and just don't know much about them. But if you are thinking about lavender, they are gorgeous in person!! I bet Peep knows about the porcelian/isabel.

Are you wondering if porcelain breed true? Since they carry the lav gene, I doubt it. I would think that you would get some porcelain and some lavender and porcelain come in different shades. Some are very pale and some almost look like blue partridge.
