I was able to get a really cute picture of my girl. She will be in my BBS pen this spring. She's so pretty, I had to share with my silkie-loving friends!

We only have a small number of Silkies but on cold nights, they're fine with their body-heat. Same during the day. Our coop is tight and dry, but unheated, and there have been no issues.

We also don't provide a heated waterer. But because of that, I know that I may have to check a few times per day to make sure the water has not frozen. I tend to take the waterers out at night so I'm not breaking thick ice in the morning.

That said, our Silkies have done better than some of our 'cold hardy' chickens in the layer coop with season.

I'm in Upstate South Carolina. Not the worst winters in the country but we do have many, many nights below freezing and in the teens and snow occasionally. It can be 50 during the winter day but it can also be 30. I did not give my silkies heat or use heated waterers. They were fine. They went in the coop and snuggled up if they were cold or under the coop. However, I lost two during the horrible, hot summer we had. So IMHO, winter was fine. Summer... not so much. I think it depends on how cold it gets where you are. We actually had a huge snow/ice storm and my silkies were out in the middle of it with everyone else.

Thank you!! I'm hoping she will make some beautiful little babies. My 11 year old daughter wants to show her. She has never shown chickens before, but she is excited. I just had her NPIP tested on Friday and I'm awaiting the results. Then, we should be good to go.

Out of a BBS pen I have got a partridge chick, and my splash look almost white. My hens are beautiful so I wouldn't want to get rid of them. Would getting a new roo help?

The partridge died young to an unknown cause.
