Silkie thread!

Not a Silkie, but my RIR roo does this too. I've looked at his foot, and checked different threads to see pics of any diseases or abnormal things... His foot looks like a normal foot... I think its a roo thing. My D'uccle did it too before he was rehomed.

Thank you, that makes me feel much better.

First time posting in this part of the forum... i have a new little Silkie flock and cant wait for them to grow up a bit. Trying to decide who is girls and boys. Some are way to young for that but I have 3 that are 8 weeks old. Any opinions ?

two pics of this one

and two pics of another I am assuming is a boy :)

and then there is my little Sizzle :)

Your Sizzle is gorgeous. Congrats.

Your chick looks like a pretty swan in the 4th picture.

We had a blue splash silkie named Mohawk too. Unfortunately we had to sell him because he was a HE! Our splashes are really easy to sex because they get grey/black streamers that show up in strong contrast against their lighter base feathers. Your "Mohawk" is a little more challenging because the feathers are the same color throughout. It would help to know the age and see a closeup of the comb.
He does Cali Chick! I would love to have a splash hen someday...that being said I'm sorry about not listing the age...Mohawk is around 3 months old. I can't remember what was most likely the mix on this chicken to cause the pinkish peach skin tone and beak?

All right... I have an uber dummy question, but how often does pink skin happen in silkies? One of the chicks that hatched out last night, I just realized today that it has pink toes. All of its skin is also pink. Roger has not thrown that before. SO, I am guessing that the hen and him both have that recessive gene. Any way, how often does this happen and does this mean that this chick will be worthless except as a pet? Is there a chance that the skin will turn black?
I can't see where/if this was answered, but I have had one chick with light skin so far. I am giving him away as a pet. It does make them useless for breeding I believe. Especially if you are breeding for SQ offspring. If the skin was lighter then the norm, you might still use the bird, but not if it is obviously pink.

I do notice skin darkening, but it doesn't turn black if it is pink.

So...If she is a splash, tho sold white, can she produce splash when I breed her to a blue? Would you consider her officially a white? I've read on here that white is kind of a wild card- and you never know what they will produce- but could she be a splash with no color? Thanks!

If she is solid white, wouldn't she be a white? :/

I thought that splash can start out white and develop the darker markings later?  Also, the dark markings can change as they get older.
Ohh Okay. I thought you were talking about a full grown white bird being splash.

I've had a white chick that developed markings later on. So yeah, it can happen. Molts usually result in lighter birds, correct?
