I don't have an update or answer as to WHO is laying the egg yet. No silkie eggs yesterday to examine...
( I did see some green poop!
LOL! )
-Something interesting though, 2X when I reached down to pick up Bullet (BB) s/he did the egg squat -just like my large fowl girls do. S/he even did the little back and forth action with her feet like she was bracing herself for the rooster. I'm no expert, but things are looking real good as to Bullet (BB) being the one laying those eggs.
Someone asked about how much food coloring I used and how I used it: I just squeezed the bottle (a little) inside the vent. For all I know, they just pooped it right out. I probably should have put more in but I'm a bit squeemish about doing it. I actually read about using the food coloring on a post by Sundown Silkies (who does it quite regularly) so I'm sure it doesn't hurt them. Sundown also posted a picture of the 'red streaked' egg 3 days after applying the food coloring. Hopefully it will work for me....I just need to see the tiniest streaks of green and I'll know it's my BB.

Streamers are the longer feathers that 'stream' off the head and hackle area of silkie roosters. Some roosters have a slicked-back look to their crest and most of their head feathers look like streamers. My splashes have nice round crests and then have the streamers coming in sort of from the top center down the neck area.....kind of like a crazy mohawk of contrasting dark feathers. Other silkies have different color variations. Here are some pictures of my two young cockerels (while they were in rooster prison this morning so they wouldn't alarm any neighbors.)That is FUNNY!!!and...she just layed it right there on the floor not even in a box? Well...my husband found a silkie egg outside of the coop. All the older hens lay in the coop. Two lay in the boxes up top and one lays under the hanging food container. Soooo, I wondered...Could I be wrong on the age and they be 4 months but, that is still too early. Tell me about the streamers...are they coming down from their legs, tail, what? I'm NEW at this chicken stuff. I can't believe how much there is to learn and be prepared for. Right now I'm dealing with two broody hens that I am trying to break.
Thanks for the heads up though and I look forward to how the lipstick works and who layed your egg!![]()
This is my first silkie egg and I didn't even have a nest box in the coop or pen area yet.I totally wasn't expecting eggs for a couple more months. I put a box of pine shavings in the pen after the first egg, but the only ones that hop in are the cockerels! Oh-and I ended up using 2 different colors of food coloring on the 2 blue silkies. Hopefully we'll get a streaked egg today!![]()
