Metronidazole is an antibiotic that treats certain types of bacterial infections, if the respiratory is caused by a virus, it will not work (no more than it would on a person with a bad chest cold). Per the Mayo Clinic " It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. However, this medicine will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections." It is a limited drug that is used for:
With dogs (primarily) it is used to combat the effects of giardia, and is used with panacure. 'Zole helps relieve the diarreha and irritable bowel but should only be used for around three days and in conjunction with panacur to kill the parasite. The longer it is used the higher the risk of liver damage as this drug is metabalized by the liver. We are now understanding that the 10-day run- that vets were using- was too long and has led to other, more serious, issues. It is not an antibiotic to use lightly and this is not the correct antibiotic for any lung issues. I have seen some bird sites saying to use this but the only reason I could see is if you suspected giardia, and in this case, you do not.
Amoxicillin (Moxi) or Baytril are much more geared toward upper respiritory infections. Moxi is easier to come by than Baytril is though. Also keep in mind that Baytril is the highest tier antibiotic. Which means that if an animal gaines a resistance to it, there is nothing else to go to.
