Silkie thread!

Waiting on a call back from AC, one hen is still out but alive, everyone else has fluffed up and started to look normal again. My roo LFB's neck looks a little longer now since some of his bowtie was pulled out...

But here is a pic of my escapee, Psyco, and that is about the closest I could get to her.

They are all fine, just a little wet still thanks to a storm front moving through.
dogs are reason i have no out side pens

I don't go on this thread much so I'm really behind on what's been happening. These birds are gorgeous

and awesome pictures with the sunset!
I like looking at pictures of birds. = ) So.....Just thought I would share some I took of my birds upon returning from a show in June 2012. As you can see, the sun was setting and the lighting made for some neat pictures.

With the lay of the land here, outside pens are the best option for keeping a close eye on my birds. The building I was using for a coop, an old corn crib, was too far back for me to hear if something was happening. Plus there are at least ten mature pecan and walnut trees near all the buildings and with the hurricanes and other various storms (my county is currently under a tornado watch until 5pm tonight) the trees are dropping HUGE limbs, of which a few have landed on my cattle barn (unoccupied) and our pump house. The location of my current pen is right near my horse's water trough in the side yard that I can see from my living room. I have put much thought into the location and how the pen is reenforced. The ONLY reason that dog was able to get near my birds is because I let them be birds and free range for bugs and fresh greens. I have found that they are happier and produce better tasting eggs than the ones my hubby kept locked up just for fresh eggs. I know I take risks letting them out, but I know it makes them happy, and that's all I want for my critters.

Also keep in mind, I am on 90 acres here, other than the neighbor across the street, the are all at least a quarter mile away. This is the first dog problem I have had. Hawks, owls and ferril/wild cats are all I have had to deal with, and fairly easy to combat.
Aw well at least Psyco is there.
I did get her chased back in. All the other hens greeted her as she walked in, soaked to the bone and testy as ever.

Hello all! I have another newbie question!! I originally had two silkies that are now 4 months old...they caught on in one night to go up the ramp from the run into the coop and I've had no problems with them since. Just recently I got 2 more silkies and they are a bit older and there eyes are more covered than my other two. For the past two nights that I have had them they have decided to sleep out in the run instead of in the coop...I'm not sure if they don't know how to get back up the ramp...or if they don't want to be in the coop with my two originals. I don't have access to my run so there is no way I can get in there and put them in the coop myself. Anyone have any suggestions? and is this normal behavior?
