Silkie thread!

I've hatched both ways (laying the eggs on their sides and in cartons) and I'm not sure which I like best. Either way -the hatched chicks tend to crawl over the slower eggs. And both ways still leave a mess of shells behind (though it is just the egg-top when in the cartons). I read somewhere that if you incubate eggs on their sides (days 1-18) then you should hatch on their sides.....but if you incubate in an egg turner, you should hatch in cartons??? That makes a little sense, considering the egg will remain at a more consistant level (from the heat source) but I don't know. Everytime I prepare for lockdown I go back and forth about using cartons or not........

I guess the advantage of using cartons is that it is easier to watch for pips and keep track of everyone since they don't roll out of "position".

Which way do you hatch?

Here is a freshly hatched "Mysty Blue" (my avatar) encouraging everyone else to join her (back in February)

And here are some carton babies...........
I would like to try the egg cartons. Do you know where i can find out good info about hatching. (very detailed, specific....?)

Where did you get the diapers? Is there anythng for boys, that way ALL the silkies can be out together without roos trying to cover hens they aren't supposed to be covering?
YES they have a bunch of different patterns! I went on ebay, I just typed in chicken diaper. They hand make them for you and they are quite easy to figure out. They go on like overalls. I got the small for $8, you may need a medium though. Here's the link. You order what you want and put a message with your order with the size and pattern you want. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-Medium-Ch...422?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a79d03d0e

okay she slashed the amount of pattern choices, but they are still good!

I bought mine right here on BYC in the "Buy, Sell, Trade" section for $7 each, including shipping.

I got a pink print for my girls and a green camouflage for my boys. I really need to put them on the silkies now that they are full grown. I might be able to find a picture of Mysty Blue wearing one when she was still little................
...........kinda big!

And Storm in the camo print

Here on BYC, of course! Just type in "hatching with egg cartons" or "how to hatch with cartons", etc. There will be hundreds of posts to read. It's nice to hear peoples different experiences (pros and cons). You can also click the learning center tab and read everything pertaining to hatching.

Here's a good one... https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/327655/to-hatch-in-egg-carton-or-not

How old do silkies need to be to be wormed? What is the best wormer to use? I have a bunch of young silkies in grow out pen. One pen they are 3-4 months old . Then I have another pen with 6-8 week old . Thanks for any advice.

im getting some 4 week old pure bred silkies in a few weeks, soooooooooo excited, cant wait. should i make a new run for them that is really grassy and leafy? because my large fowl run is pretty bare because they scratched all the vegetation out and it gets a little muddy and i heard that silkies wont wreck the grass a other plants as much as larger fowl and because of their feathered feet its a good idea to keep them out of the dirt/ mud.

Please help me and im really interested to keep watching this thread.
