Silkie thread!

I am not a complete expert nor a complete idiot.

But, I think the toe issue is fairly minor and that if you were to breed them, they coukd have normal toed chicks. As long as they have five toes that is good. Not all are perfectly spaced. I hatched a lobster toed one too. (2claws to one toe). It does happen. Probably someone more knowledgable will have some advice.

O thats sad when an egg breaks and there is a living chick inside.

There are some vaccinations you can give your chicks. They are usually given when they are fairly young. McMurray sells some and JeffersLivestock sells some. There are also instructions on how to give shots on the computer I could link you to if interested.
Thanks Tiki I would love the link. Also, I was thinking if that extra nail could be cut off???

I'm certainly no expert on silkie toes either, but I've done a lot of reading and research. The chick with the extra nail, I would not use that bird for breeding or show (it would be DQ'd if the judge noticed it).

The bird with the partially fused toes, if it's perfect in every other way, I would use it, but be very aware of watching for problems in chicks it produces. Of course, if it's a roo, I wouldn't use it. That would just be putting the issue over all your girls.

On the other hand, if your purpose is only to produce backyard pets, then just keep and use any birds you like.

Deb ~ I would like to produce some nice silkies for sale. Could that extra nail be trimmed off and would it grow back?

I am getting some new pure bred silkies, 1 black 2 brown in a couple of weeks, so excited ive already named them

1black Slikie- "Berries" (as in black berries)
1brown Silkie- "Fudge"
1brown Silkie- "Puddles" (as in mud puddles because of her colour)
So where are you getting "Pure Bred" silkies from if I can ask? And I sure want to see pictures of your babies.

I have a brownish silkie that is not partridge, but I don't believe there are many chocolate silkies available.
I wonder why it is such a hard colour to master?

I don't know enough about the chocolate genetics to understand it

ETA: Image. Like I said "Brown-ish"
Best brood hen I have. She's on her second time this year with me and I've only had her since mid July.
Beautiful little Minkster! On another note how do you put your name on your photos?

Love their names!

Yeah she has a weird shape. She's quite old. She is an asset because of her ultra protective broody powers. She is the most aggressive broody I have, which is awesome. I don't fear putting her out free ranging with my older birds. She will WHOOP them.
ChicksNherps, she is just mixed colouring. My sizzle George is her father.

I would love to see a full picture of George, he looks fabulous.

Quote: You could trim it off (the extra piece of toe), like removing the dewclaw from a puppy. However, that would be wrong. First, it would be considered faking, would DQ the bird from shows and destroy your reputation if it was caught (mind you, I'm not saying you would do that, it's just what would happen to anyone).

The main thing, it would do you no good because it would still be there genetically. It would be like marrying someone that had a secret nose job and then wondering why all your kids had funny noses!

Wow! That is a great hatch rate, epecially considering how far your eggs traveled. I'm so sorry about the egg that fell out of the nest. I know that made you sick :( I ordered white, black, and blue/splash. After seeing your pics I wish that I'd gotten some porcelain and lavender. I have 24 eggs on day 3. I have been lurking this site since the spring. I started hatching as a hobby for my son. I have been admiring the pics of chicks that were hatched from kelar's eggs, but I was afraid to take the plunge since I live in VA. Your post made me so happy that I took the chance. Keep us updated with pics of your beautiful babies!
4mom82 ~ Our son is attending Liberty University in Lynchburg. We are headed to see him October 18th for parent weekend. He is in his 2nd year but by the end of this semester will have a junior standing. We love that area and my husband has actually been applying for jobs at the university!

In 7 more days you can candle them

how exciting!

Gorgeous, your patridge looks like a paint to me :) :)
In looking at Karen's list of chicks for sale there were no paints. This egg was marked PA so I'm pretty sure it's a Partridge. I know they come in various colors and hers are very deep rich colors. I can't wait to see what it will end up looking like. Thanks for the compliment.

black to slash always blue
Chickendales it is so cute... It looks like it has a vest on,
lau.gif
I want to call it PoohBear...wasn't it Winnie the Pooh who wore a vest?

I hate how these pictures turn on you when you upload but the Partridge is so colorful and reminds me of a chipmunk so my husband said we need to call it "ALVINNNNNNNNN"
gig.gif
if it's a girl Alvina?
