Silkie thread!

Just an update on Henry. He got himself a female friend on Saturday - Sheba - and they havesettled in well together. At night they even sleep side-by-side and it looks so sweet. I will post pics of them both together soon......

A question: At what date should i be considering putting out my Silkie chicks? They are now 7 weeks old and almost fully feathered. Are they too small to go out @ 8 weeks? I can provide a nighttime heat lamp......

Wow... last year I hatched 6 beautiful buff chicks! So gorgeous... only 1 had some black in there I didn't want. Go figure, all 6 were ROOSTERS! That was the last straw with buff silkies for me, and I sold them all and bought myself a black hen to make myself feel better.

This year, I bought another white and Blue Frizzle Showgirl to play with the genes. Looks like I may be hatching some more blue silkie/showgirl mixes to add to them soon.

I miss trying with buffs or course, they were the reason I ever got chickens in the first place!!!

I guess I have high end, out country, chicken tastes... before I ever owned a chicken.

Colie <3 :

How often do you set eggs usually? I'm contemplating doing a staggered hatch since I have two incubators. In theory it sounds good but sorta scary too lol

I use egg turners and I numbered each row. When I add eggs I use a little post-it tab and write the row # and lock down date on it. I use another incubator for the lock downs. I also write on each egg the date it was gathered and from whom and write it in a log. If I wasn't so careful I would have a mess. I wouldn't remember which was which. When I remove the eggs to go in the "hatcher" I take the tab off the incubator and but it on the hatcher.

Hope that helps.

In the context most commony used amongst american silkie breeders, it would be a silkie imported from the Netherlands. Many of the paints and reds are of Dutch origin. Type is a bit different than in American silkies--in general, shorter feathers, smaller crests, less "S" shaped. The reds are more of a pure red rather than the red columbian of US red silkes; also mahogany is far more evident in them.

However, it could be a silkied dutch, which is an entirely different breed, just exhibiting silkie feathering.

Soo How manny Buff breeders do we have on here? Just starting out AND already breeding? There seems to be alot of talk about how tough buffs are, maybe we should create a thread for buff breeders to talk about breeding and such? Just a thought.

Hi Im a buff breeder have quite a few and oldest chicks are a month...dont have a pullet from sundown yet...cant wait for all the feathering out...some of the babies are born with a darkish under color but it seems to disappear as they start to grow their fluff feathers...anyone else experience that???????
