New to Silkies...well, I've tried before but had bad luck. My first hen was a splash Silkie, and I didn't know I shouldn't just have one. She seemed depressed. I got her some friends but they didn't like each other. Then she just died :-( In her nesting box. I only had her about 2 weeks and I felt awful. One of the friends I had gotten her was a 3 m.o. white silkie, the other was a light brahma, same age. The silkie, Sally, turned out to be a Sal and I didn't think I wanted a rooster so I rehomed him, and had to let the light brahma go with him because they were best friends, and I never want to leave or send out a chicken without a childhood friend after what happened to my first girl (I think she died of depression).

Anyway, now I am hatching Silkie eggs, and I'm wondering if you can help me tell what they should look like as babies. There are paints and lavenders, but I imagine the lavenders won't ALL hatch lavender, right? And even if they will be lavender, what color should they be as babies? I know the paints are yellow, but will they already have their little spots? I have one that hatched (my broodie is two days ahead of the bators), and it's yellow but with a little black smudgy on its head. There are also b/bl/splah eggs, and splash eggs, which I have tried to separate but they may hop around when they hatch. There are about 30 of them. First one pipped this morning. I'm rambling, sorry sorry sorry, it's my first hatch. Oh help...

Paint does not breed true so you may get many different colors. If the baby is going to be paint, they are usually pale yellow with a spot or two and get more spots later. Sometimes they are born with lots of spots and sometimes non. Lavender are born pale silver, sometimes mottled looking, but pale. They will be hard to tell from splash. I use simple dividers in my incubator to keep them separate. If your lav and spash mingle you will have a hard time telling them apart for a while. Your yellow chick is very likely a paint. Hope so!!

Oh, thank you so much!  And yes, I love my broody.  She's a BCM, and had only been laying for about 5 weeks.  Then the rooster got to her, and I guess she'd been watching too many Lifetime movies, because apparently she assumed she was pregnant and the next day she was on maternity leave... The weird thing is, her sister, who started laying the same time as her, then went on strike and stopped laying, but is not broody.  Guess she's just on vacation.

Thats funny

Thanks LavenderFeather and peepblessed for the information on kelar.

Thank you so much for this information. This helps tremendously. I put egg carton lids in the bator and set the lavenders in one, the paints in another, the other eggs outside of them. I don't know if the chips will hop out of those or not. I do have small zip ties in a few colors but I'm afraid these birds are too tiny for those. Maybe I can mark them with food dye, just a little drop...

I'll be getting two silkies today :D So excited~ First time with silkies anything I should know, heat problems and such!! and how often would they lay eggs, they'll be 5 weeks, so I know I will be waiting a while for their eggs Already have a name picked out! Gonna name one Hedwig not sure other names~

So I have decided to scale back my silkies and focus in on calicos, since they have stolen my heart to the core. I have the one girl (my avatar) and my new boy comes this weekend. I am on the lookout for a few more pullets for the pen.

I will admit, I kept 2 little partridge from my last hatch (Marneypoo). I just couldn't bear to let them go.....

They are about 2 months old now. Fingers crossed.....
