Silkie thread!

So I have decided to scale back my silkies and focus in on calicos, since they have stolen my heart to the core. I have the one girl (my avatar) and my new boy comes this weekend. I am on the lookout for a few more pullets for the pen.

I will admit, I kept 2 little partridge from my last hatch (Marneypoo). I just couldn't bear to let them go.....

They are about 2 months old now. Fingers crossed.....
ur calico in ur avatar pic is a beauty and ur ot alone in this project im working on them to as for are a couple others keep me updated

Thank you so much for this information. This helps tremendously. I put egg carton lids in the bator and set the lavenders in one, the paints in another, the other eggs outside of them. I don't know if the chips will hop out of those or not. I do have small zip ties in a few colors but I'm afraid these birds are too tiny for those. Maybe I can mark them with food dye, just a little drop...

Permanent markers will also work. They will soon be able to jump out of a lid. :D

I would get some hardware cloth and skirt it around your pen. L sape it off your pen on to the ground. You want a good eighteen inches on the ground, if you want you can bury it a little under the dirt or just on top, I like to put a few heavy rocks on it at first then the grass will grow right thru it. I want to go down to the river and get some nice big flat river rock on the heavy side and dig them in a little around my Silkie pen and make like a sidewalk. For now I've been putting those big building blocks with the two holes in them ( cant think what there called right now) around mine till I get my river rocks. The good thing is the grounds so hard right now from no rain it's like a rock.
I was out with my peeps in the orchard yesterday and here come one of those darn hawks flying right towards us I stood up and flapped my arms hoping that would show him how big I was as I'm thinking about attacking him if he kept coming thank goodness he veered off and landed in a tree right by us staring at my chickens. I grabbed up Sassy that can't see good from all her fluff and shooed Rusty in the coop who really wanted to stay out, he looked at me like I was nuts maybe he thought he could take him. He did growl at him. Darn hawk ruined or time in the orchard.

I wish they would move on.
Ya I talked to a woman yesterday and said if you wet a rag with formalgahide(sp?) and put it around the perimeter it causes skunks to relocate, gonna try it heck what have I got to loose!!!

I have, I was given the response "two girls and the third is a maybe girl, maybe boy" Well the problem is, my best looking bird is that maybe kid.
How old is he/she now? When they are around 4 months, the first thing that I see change is their stance. They become very erect and their legs seem to look longer in comparison to a pullet. Next would be the neck feathers, giving them a shaggy lion-like look. Then finally.. the comb. Post another pic, recent, and everyone can try it again. :)

Is a calico a buff and patridge cross love those markings how very pretty, I have a partridge roo who has a harem of two buffs a black and two splash was wondering what I might end up with. I know these may not be acceptable color blends for show but this is just a hobby for me.

I'll be getting two silkies today :D So excited~ First time with silkies anything I should know, heat problems and such!! and how often would they lay eggs, they'll be 5 weeks, so I know I will be waiting a while for their eggs Already have a name picked out! Gonna name one Hedwig not sure other names~

I think the biggest things with silkies that are different from other chickens are they don't realize that their feathers don't repel water, you need to make sure they can see well enough through that fluffy crest and they are susceptible to head injury. Welcome to our thread!

Those are really adorable chicks and I love the girl in your avatar but I'm wondering why you call her calico? She looks light partridge to me. Not saying I'm right by any means. Just wondering. :D
