Silkie thread!

Here are my new silkies, they are now about 4 days old. A friend mentioned they did not have much of a crest and asked if they were a cross. I only have one roo and I just got a Jersey roo but he is young yet. Just wanted to know what everyone thought. When do their crests become more evident. I did have one with a more prominent crest but unfortunately it got stuck in the pen before I changed them to this enclosure.

I use a wire slicker brush.
Is this a brush that is normally sold for dogs?

You can use a wet wash cloth, or tilt their heads back and use the hose backwards like a baby while putting your hand above the nostrils to block water. This is what I do, but if your silkie is squirmy you can just use the washcloth. They are susceptible to upper respiratory infections if they get water up their nose, I have done it a couple times on accident and they sneeze for a day or two. Unfortunately I had to really scrub my polish's crest because he had lice and his crest was disgusting when I got him so I had to rinse it really well.
Yes, mine squirmed and they did get some water up their nose. I may have to just use the washcloth as I don't think any of them will allow me to put them upside down to wash their crests. I have already experienced the URI and it wasn't due to water up the nose but, I want it to go away!

It's from a wood stove, so you wouldn't put treated lumber in there anyway - otherwise you are subjecting your household air to those chemicals. Yes it's untreated. I have SO much of the stuff, as we heat our house with a wood furnace. Might as well use it for something! They love dust bathing in the stuff!
We only burn cured tree wood in our fireplace at home. Now our outside firepit we burn whatever and I don't even use that ash on my gardens or anything as I don't want the chemicals in my food. But...someone else just might not know so I wanted to bring it up. Maybe this year I can add the fireplace ash to their dust bath wait...those white silkies would turn black

Thank You!!!

I have tried posting pictures on the polish threads but no one responds as to how he looks. But I haven't gotten very good pictures either. He's a silver laced too, I think the only other person in NH with silver laced is the woman I got him from haha.

I have to admit would love to have a polish so fun to look at, but have to be careful otherwise I may become a chicken hoarder, I am trying to keep a flock of about 12 chickens max. Right now I have silkie chicks and have 15.

HAHAHA Don't we know the hoarder addict mentality! I started with 4 free chicks in May and now I have 16 YIKES and I too would love to have a Polish and other ones too. Must NOT go shopping for chickens.
