most people put them in the sink filled with warm soapy water, I like to use the sink hose and put the shampoo on straight. You can use just dawn or you can use a dog shampoo, whitening works best for whites. But nothing with tea tree oils or that is tearless those are bad for them. I just gave my polish a bath in fact. After rinsing the soap off rinse him in water with a little apple cider vinegar, it will cut through any remaining soap and moisturize the feathers. I prefer to blowdry my chickens(on semi-warm, not too hot) after the bath but many people will just put them in a pen with shavings and a heat lamp to dry off. Just make sure they stay warm while they are wet. and don't get water up their nose or soap in their eyes.

I know getting water up the nose in a human isn't that great and so a chicken wouldn't be either but...what if it does happen and the water gets in their nostrils? Do they choke, get sick, what happens? How do you wash their crests and not get the water in their nostrils?

I wondered if anyone else used a comb on their silkies, haha I have taken a men's comb and used it on my Roo because he just doesn't seem to groom himself that well. It looks like Ruby is enjoying her combing.

I use a wire slicker brush.

Hey Bud! Funky fits this boy, ha He does strike a great pose and he does his job scurrying about making sure all the hens are okay and where they should be. The teens are enjoying the great outdoors. They are now the last ones to go inside the potting shed. I'm waiting on hubs to build the coop extension for these sweeties. He says he has a great design in mind. I can't wait he is so creative. Will you be going to the show in Dalton this month?

I know getting water up the nose in a human isn't that great and so a chicken wouldn't be either but...what if it does happen and the water gets in their nostrils? Do they choke, get sick, what happens? How do you wash their crests and not get the water in their nostrils?

You can use a wet wash cloth, or tilt their heads back and use the hose backwards like a baby while putting your hand above the nostrils to block water. This is what I do, but if your silkie is squirmy you can just use the washcloth. They are susceptible to upper respiratory infections if they get water up their nose, I have done it a couple times on accident and they sneeze for a day or two. Unfortunately I had to really scrub my polish's crest because he had lice and his crest was disgusting when I got him so I had to rinse it really well.

When you say wood ash are you talking about the ash that is left from a wood fire?  And if so, you would only want to use the ash from non-treated wood right?

It's from a wood stove, so you wouldn't put treated lumber in there anyway - otherwise you are subjecting your household air to those chemicals. Yes it's untreated. I have SO much of the stuff, as we heat our house with a wood furnace. Might as well use it for something! They love dust bathing in the stuff!
