I agree!!
I've been missing in action (with Christmas sewing and baking) and have sure missed this thread.
THANK YOU, everyone for the adorable pictures.

They make my day!

I wanted to let my "silkie friends" know the good news.......I put 6 of Mysty Blues' eggs in the incubator on December 14th.

And, the best part is that at least 4 of them are developing!!!

Hatchday is January 4th. I will be sure to update and post pictures.

Here is a picture of Mysty Blue (left) and Mr. Puff (right)...the Mommy and Daddy of these eggs. These will be the very first chicks from my own silkies and I am SO excited.
I know how exciting that is!! Do you still have your roos?
Okay thanks!

I have 0 experience with silkies so do the roosters crow like regular ones?
I best silkie roo has the loudest crow I've ever heard!
Just adorable!!
That's not fair, my DW's Silkies I got her are entering that "ugly" "I am getting my big bird feathers" stage. They look so ratty.

Fortunately that stage doesn't last too long. :D

Now, my friend gave me hers when she moved and that one has splash all over it. This one is just basically a greyish blue all over, the splash is 'maybe' just so light I can not really see it. in this picture it looks like there is splash on it, but it doens't really! it is really solid.
What do her wing feathers look like? Are they all identical in color?
That silkie sleeping ----

Love your photos. :D Such sweet looking birds!
My fuzzy butts are finally laying! So thrilled and surprised to go out this morning, after the coldest night so far (20s) to find eggs in the shelter! If no one goes broody by the end of the week, I'm bringing the eggs inside for a New Year's hatch!

Here's a picture of the gang - Chardonnay (roo), Priscilla and Snowflake. (Pardon the muddy feetsies.)

Just Chardonnay and Priscilla (background)

Great news! Lovely flock!!

Breeders sell birds individually, in pairs, in trios, etc. Rarely do they sell chicks. Whatever they have available that you want. Hatcheries sell chicks in minimum quantities.
The breeders around here have always sold me chicks. I have never bought a silkie over 3 months old from a breeder. I am sure you can find some in your area. Check craigslist in the farm and garden section.

I think that is what I will plain on doing! I can't have roosters so I need to make sure I get a hen so the feed store is out!

This is my silkie roo Fred. There are 4 chicks under him keeping warm. I go out every night and pick them all up and put them in the coop. And every night there are 3-4 chicks under him keep warm. I call him Momma Fred!

no one will be able to 100% sex a chicken for you unless it has layed or crowed, so then it would be older. They can take their best guess but it is never guaranteed. When you get one, post a picture and we can try to help you sex it.
