I have a question!


If I were to get a silkie chick from my local feed store what is the likelihood that it would be female? meaning are they harder to sex more then regular chicks?

If possible try to find a breeder to buy from. The feed store will have hatchery birds and you may end up with a very ugly silkie.

Plus supporting the hatchery is perpetuating badly bred birds. There will be breeders here on BYC selling fabulous chicks and will ship. I currently only ship hatching eggs but may ramp up to chicks come spring. I would just be so worried about them until arrival.

Thanks for the tip! I don't want an ugly silkie! The problem is I only want one and can only have one to keep indoors and I think I have read most breeders have a limit when shipping???? not sure on that! But I will take that into consideration and try to find a local breeder.Thanks

Maybe try craigslist that's where I found my two boys, and there are also some online places you could buy them from websites like Meyer Hatchery I think and chickens for backyards maybe. I'm still waiting to hear their little crows XD it'll be funny, I heard my RIR Roo' when he was a few months old it made me laugh cause he sounded like one of those party whistle things. now hes 8 or 9 months I think lol bad at remembering and the silkies are 4 months old and still small. They LOVEE bread LOL and Raisins!

Now, my friend gave me hers when she moved and that one has splash all over it. This one is just basically a greyish blue all over, the splash is 'maybe' just so light I can not really see it. in this picture it looks like there is splash on it, but it doens't really! it is really solid.

MY 3 year old watched that video and said, "chickens in the house??" LOL He doesn't remember 'back when' when we used to let the chickens in when hubby was not home. hahahaha!!!!! We have cats now and some of the chickens are afraid of the cats LOL.

My fuzzy butts are finally laying! So thrilled and surprised to go out this morning, after the coldest night so far (20s) to find eggs in the shelter! If no one goes broody by the end of the week, I'm bringing the eggs inside for a New Year's hatch!
