Silkie thread!

Quote: I have cured chickens with respiratory issues by putting oxine, mixed according to directions, in a spray bottle & spraying in their face several times a day. It worked very well. They need to inhale the Oxine vapors. Use a sprayer that has a fine mist if possible. Using a nebulizer would work better, but if you don't have one, try the spray bottle. Or, you could use it in a humidifier as well right in the coop. That way, all the birds would benefit.

I did try the spray bottle method, but it just got the silkies soaked and they shook their heads away from the spray. She took to the neb well because she couldn't feel it

BTW, were you the woman selling chicks at the show? My friend bought a white silkie chick from the top drawer but we forgot to ask how old it is, looks to be only a few days old.

Hello!

I am really anxious to start my first flock of silkies in the next few months. I am on a wait list for chicks. There are so many posts on this thread, that it is overwhelming!

I do not want to ask questions that have already been answered, but I am not sure how to really find the answers to my questions.

1. I know the coop should be pretty low to the ground to avoid ramps. Also, roosting bars should be low. Any other coop suggestions?

2. How much space should I allow for a run? I plan to start with 6-8 chicks, but I know chicken math applies! Lol!

3. Any other newbie info?

I did create a thread over on the coop board but did not really get many responses.

Thanks in advance for your time and advice!

So excited!!!

:)

If they had a respiratory fungal infection oxine would clear it up. I think I have a post on it somewhere I will find it. I couldn't figure out what Nori had, so I bought oxine and tylan and I mixed the oxine with water (will find dosage) and put it in a nebulizer and sat with Nori on the couch watching tv for a half hour or until it ran out. You can also use a humidifier.

found it: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/710438/need-help-in-diagnosing-treating
Now I need to find a nebulizer if the tylan doesn't work.

Or maybe I'll try the spray bottle marquisella suggested. I don't have a humidifier either.. Man...I need a raise!

Caring for these sick chickens is so much work.

But I'm not about to let any animal suffer if I can do anything about it! lol

I have tried to look all thru this Silkie Thread... and ummm there sure is alot to read... I thought I would throw this just out. I am going to buy Silkies this spring... looking now for a coop... so my questions are any suggestions? Do Silkies roost ? do they like to sit on straw?  Do they go into a nesting box which would be level for them since they are small ? I was thinking about buying the little Briar's Trailer Coop by GreenChickenCoop company ... anyone have this as a bad idea?. I was planning on having 3 silkies ...so the small coop was going to be good for me. I live in New England. ANY and I mean ANY suggestions would be greatly appreaciated. :)

I have 3 Silkies and 3 Feather Pullets. I use the Booda Litter Box and they Love it....it's very convenient and portable, I leave it out in the yard while they're out to range. It's awesome because I haven't had to worry about them finding a hiding spot to lay their eggs...I plan on getting a couple more due to the fact they stand in line or barge in on one another to lay. Haaaa

Some silkies do roost. Not very high, but they will get on some little perches.
Ours like to climb up their little ladder. And some pile up on the ground in the corner of the coop.

Our silkie can jump to about the same height as she is. Ie I had an old coffee table I didn't want so put it in their run for shade and she can jump up onto that.

Mine sleep on straw in the nesting box which just has a ramp to help them get in.
