Silkie thread!

I've had my M Best Gray pair for two months now. I think they are close to six months. The male hasn't crowed yet. They are together 24/7. They 'talk' to each other constantly. Just finished giving them a bath and blow out. Trimmed their nails. Took almost two hours!

Mostly took so long because I only have the good use of one arm. Trying to keep them from drowning themselves in two inches of water was tricky. We figured it out together. Got to use my new toe nail trimming gizmo I bought at Pet Smart yesterday along with the nice smelling kitty shampoo.
Then it was time for their monthly portrait.

They have had quite enough of me and refused to pose nicely. This is as good as I good get a photo of them together.

They did enjoy being toted all around the house in my laundry basket.

Mumsy,

They look older in this last picture than in the first that you posted on the NCK thread :)

I have tried to look all thru this Silkie Thread... and ummm there sure is alot to read... I thought I would throw this just out. I am going to buy Silkies this spring... looking now for a coop... so my questions are any suggestions? Do Silkies roost ? do they like to sit on straw? Do they go into a nesting box which would be level for them since they are small ? I was thinking about buying the little Briar's Trailer Coop by GreenChickenCoop company ... anyone have this as a bad idea?. I was planning on having 3 silkies ...so the small coop was going to be good for me. I live in New England. ANY and I mean ANY suggestions would be greatly appreaciated.

Some of my silkies roost up on a little ladder. And some pile up on the ground under the ladder and get pooped on.

I don't think they'd go much higher than that because they can't fly.
I don't know if they like straw or not. I can't imagine why they wouldn't sit on straw?
I don't have personal experience with nesting boxes either, but I'm pretty sure they'll go in one.
Good luck with the silkies! You'll be addicted in no time.

He's looking like my rooster Curly.

Curly just doesn't have the dark on his feet and hackles.

Macho is doing just fine

I've been watching him closely these past few days, and he seems to show no sign that he was even injured. He's back to crowing, chasing hens, and poking his little manly chest out.

The silkies have been wandering out into the pasture overlooking the pond lately. They make me extremely nervous, being out in the open with all of the hawks around, so I usually sit outside and babysit when they're freeranging. It's so nice to see them scratching around, and being chickens

And...I put some eggs in the incubator! Maybe Macho is going to be a father!!

What a beautiful, beautiful sight that is! So jealous.

Glad Macho is doing well.

Try Tylan 50 injectable. You can give it orally as well. I can find the dosage for you.

I found my cockerel sneezing today!!!!

I'll give him some of this stuff also. Then I thought I heard someone else sniffling too... I think I'm getting paranoid! lol But better to be safe than sorry, right? I gave everybody some VetRX and added vitamins and electrolytes in the water. Added extra shavings in the coop, hoping that will keep them warmer.

Do you think it would hurt to give Tylan to the rest of the flock also as a preventative just incase this sneezing is something that's spreading?

My little girl who has dry skin hasn't improved. Her wattles and face are still very dry. I am leaning toward favus now. I am planning on going to the store and get some antigungal cream. Once applied, when should I see any result? I know it's pretty contagious, but the other ones don't seem to have it. Should I treat them just in case?
If you buy cream, look for vaginal antifungal with Miconazole. I bought the Rite Aid version which was cheaper than the name brand. I understand that sometimes Favus will create a honeycomb look to the skin. You could check your pullet to see if this is developing. Rather than treat the others, you might consider quarantining her for a little while, just until you get this resolved.

quick question, can vetrx be used on a baby? I want to put a little under it's wings. would it be safe?
Since chicks are so tiny, so be cautious with the amount you use.

I apologize that I have been offline and did not respond to the last question about the eye drops...and now I cant locate who posted the question. The eye drops we have at home are probably similar to what you have for the horses...Polymyxin B Sulfate and Trimethoprim Opthalmic solution. Using the eye drops resolved the sneezing, mucousy nostrils and crusted eye problem.

All of my silkies pile but a couple do roost a few inches off the ground next to the pile. I have never gotten one to use a nest box. They prefer the corner of the coop unless there's a nest box there! :D I don't know if the coop you mentioned uses a ramp but most silkies won't use them without training. I checked to see where the silkies were piling and put some straw down on the sand so it wouldn't be so cold. They moved to a new location. So now they sleep on sand....

The male. I severly trimmed his crest, muff, and beard last bath. It is coming in again. Lots of dark fluff in the under part of his whole body except for his chest.

The female is a more even shade of gray throughout. I trimmed her more than the male. She's a real little piggy with her FF.
Her body is covered with pin feathers. She is slow to grow out all her feathers. I just love her coloring.

So glad he is okay! Love that photo of the flock in the field but you better not let the cotton pickers see them! :D
