Silkie thread!

Can someone tell me how to store fertile eggs until i incubate them. Do I have to put them in the fridge (if yes which temperature), or counter top (it's around 70F) or inside the incubator (if that is the case do I have to put them in the egg turner and turn them?) How long can I wait until add them in the incubator? Thank you

My little girl who has dry skin hasn't improved. Her wattles and face are still very dry. I am leaning toward favus now. I am planning on going to the store and get some antigungal cream. Once applied, when should I see any result? I know it's pretty contagious, but the other ones don't seem to have it. Should I treat them just in case?
I hope you can get some answers on this. Try googling favus.
these are my 2 new silkies i got at the Northeast Poultry congress they were unsexed so i am not sure what gender they are....i think one is a male and the other the female but who knows lol

Oh, they are cuties!!
does anyone know how I can tell who's eating the eggs?
I set an egg in front of them to see who tries to break it.

70 is okay for a week or so, but cooler is better. 50 - 60 degrees. I wouldn't use the refrigerator.

Hi, if you go to the learning center on here BYC you will find alot of helpfull info on incubating and hatching chicks. It is listed at the top of page where home tabs etc .are.
fertile chicken eggs should only be used up to ten to fourteen days, after that it slims your chances of a good hatch . I just keep mine here in room temp in the house till I get the amount I need for the incubator. they should be tilted and tilted the other way a couple times a day.
Some people say to store around 50 degrees and where it is damp. I would not put them in the fridge unless you have a frig with a set temp. for just that, as to cold will kill the embro..
when you get the amount of eggs that you want to hatch , put them in the incubator all at the same time, and yes they should be turned everyday to keep chicks from sticking to the shell.
I always get my incubator up and running a day or soahead to get my temp and humidity where I want it.
hope this helps good luck

You say the eggs should be tilted and tilted again the other way a couple times a day.
Which is the correct way to tilt the eggs?

I have read some put them in an egg carton and put a thick book under one end, then later in the day move it to the other end.
This method works very well. I would tilt them 3 to 4 times a day. I also wouldn't store them for more than ten days before you put them in the incubator. Also, while you are collecting eggs, store the ones you have already collected pointy end down and if you have a turner place them in the incubator this way as well. You want the air cell to be at the fat end of the egg. There are some really good threads about incubation on here that I would check out. Also, if you are going to use a styrofoam incubator check out ChookChicks "Incubator Cheat Sheet." A lot of people hatch out their chicks using this method or one that is similar. Happy Hatching!

OK- just saw the mustard part- thanks!

I dry my egg shells and crush them and make sure they r completely dry. Sometime I put them in blender and made a powder and I pour it over their egg pellets. They have never tried to crack an egg and their shells are getting thicker and prettier! That is what my grandma always did. They are lacking calcium and it is in the shell.

Can you all educate me a bit on silkies. I have one little pet quality silkie who has a pretty little poof on her head but no feathers on her face. I personally love this because I think Silkies have the prettiest big eyes and I love to be able to see them. I am wondering if this is a pet quality trait or is this a unbearded silkie?
