Silkie thread!

He is a splash, he will get more coloring as he gets older and matures I am sure. I have a few chicks close to his age that are colored very similar.

It IS a Splash, however, it is not a pure silkie with the red face and wattles. I think you got a crossbreed. Sorry. It is still a cute chicken and I am thinking a pullet. The color won't really change. It is the result of Blue genetics where you can get Blues, Splash and Black.

Show us a picture of the white one too and we can see if it has the right color comb and such. It has a nice crest and is bearded, I see. I am thinking that one is a pullet too.

Cool, splash is good.

That's what I assumed before I knew about the paints which look very similar in some pics. I'll get better pics of all 3 Silkies, they are all adorable. I'll be happy if that one is a pullet but I'd be surprised looking at the comb. I figured if it was a cockerel like I thought and the black was a pullet I'd breed them together and know for sure what I had.

If it's a pullet I'll pop it in with my black Bantam Cochin cockerel when they get older. If I was to guess a cross I'd say that's where the red face came from as both breeds are kept where I bought the eggs but I'd be surprised if an accident happened as they are all penned separately. They were bought to test the new 'bator and to keep as lawn ornaments, pets and broodies so faults are ok but if any are show or breeding worthy I'd be rather happy. The cute fuzzyness sure grows on you.

Howdy all silkie owners!! I just came home today with 6 new silkies. A 9 month old pair and 4 babies!

I am confused on color though. The older black has blue feather shafts but she is completely black. Is she a blue or a black?

With the babies, how does one tell the lavender color? I have one that isn't white or blue, she looks lavender!

I'm so tickled my hubby allowed me to add these to my flock!

Thanks in advance for your help!

I shot some very quick pics, ignore the mess in the background!

Here are two babies, black and white:

Here are a couple of shots of the one that confuses me color wise.

I dont have images of the older ones yet.

One of my older black girls and the two black babies have black feather shafts. But the one I question is the new 9 month old black which has feather shafts that are blue, kinda like their earlobes. Would this make her blue?

Thanks for helping me out!

Could the questionable one be a splash?? I see what looks like darker spots on the head, but maybe that is just the picture. As far as the blue shafts, I'm not sure. I haven't hatched blue chicks yet, so I haven't seen too many. One thing that people say to help tell the difference between the blue and black is that the blue's undercoat is grayish/lightblue and the black's is browns. I'm sure some more experienced silkie people will chime in though. Sorry I'm not more help. They are adorable, by the way!

I looked over all the photos I took with the flash and I do believe she is splash, just pale. I see some darker areas on her wings.

I think they are pretty cute too! They need some love, they're a bit shy.

Guys im so excited,

for my silkies! I have to wait till the fall/late summer for them tho!

But it's worth the wait because im getting a show quality (breed quality at the least) buff silkie pair from CJ Exotics. Their hatching them out and going to wait to select the birds to send me so they know their quality and gender. I just can't wait

I have had 2 people tell me this as well, one swears by it. I am waiting to see if it proves true or not. I think the one who swears by it says the V marks a boy and the rounded marks a girl. SO I am waiting to see how my bunch turn out and if it is true or not.

I have both males and females that have combs that are tight to the head at the top, and both boys and girls that are not (essentially, the comb extends upwards of where the attachment to the head ends). I've never noticed any with V-like attachments.
