Silkie thread!

You could definitely sell the eggs, but they aren't very consistent layers. I LOVE my silkies, even though only one hen is laying and it's very inconsistent. If your looking for a good lapchicken, their your breed! Be prepared though that your silkies from ideal will most likely not be show quality, especially if they are bearded. You could still show them for fun but hatcheries don't produce as much for quality as quantity. They are great broodies, but be prepared to make a broody breaker because they seem to be broody more than not haha

They LIVE to hatch! and to see just how docile they are, here is a picture of my baby Icelynn

(who by the way, just learned how to climb the ladder to her palace while I was typing this) So they are smart too! Just don't always act it because they have a hard time seeing through all that fluff. PS: Icelynn is a therapy chicken in training and goes to work with me every weekend! She helps me sell pet food.
I remember seeing Icelynn in her spring clothes in the Silkie Thread! I am not looking for a show chicken though. Did you have to potty train Icelynn? I would like to have one of my silkies in the house but I don't want it pooping everywhere lol.

So how/when will ever know if my baby silkie is a girl/boy? I will keep him/her either way, just wondering. It's actually bigger than the other bantam babies I have, and I have seen it stand up to them chest to chest.

Depending on it's quality, you can start as early as week 4 with guesses.. by week 8 more easily identified (but not fool proof, and definitely tough for really high quality birds!) By 12 weeks you should have a pretty good idea, and by 16 weeks I would say a very good idea.. My boys were all for sure boys by that age.

The silkie i was hoping would be a boy may not be after all.
I watched him/her today and studied its behavior. Lays around
perks up n runs a bit , jumps on the feeder, but never had little
sparring sessions like the other possible males. it doesn't
jump in or react at all like a male. just sits and kicks shavings
onto itself.
