Silkie thread!

Cayenne????
Yes. I ferment my non medicated chick starter using Un-ACV mixed with ground pumpkin seeds, dried Oregano, Cayenne powder, and millet seed. I have raised five batches of chicks on this and had no cocci, no pasty butts, few if any worms, and also get fast feathered thriving chicks. Chickens can not taste very much but they can smell. Oregano, Cayenne, pumpkin, and garlic are known to reduce sickness and worms in chickens and promote good health. Fermenting feed has many health benefits as well. I was thinking the chicks that were pecking their feet were having an allergic reaction but chicknlove's new Catdance chicks were exhibiting the same behavior and she doesn't feed my recipe.

How are they doing today?? Did anyone figure it out? Just thinking of you....

Hi back at ya!

They settled outside very well. Just returned from watching them and no more pecking their own feet, jumping up and down, or general agitation. I don't know if it's a weird little phenomenon to a few chicks. I watered down the FF and that lowered the degree of the cayenne, or moving them into more spacious accommodations helped. I'm relieved to see them behaving quietly like normal Silkie chicks. Which is sleeping in a pile under the heat. All twelve are just a delight to watch.

Oh I am so happy they are better! Also glad to hear you give them FF. I started doing that with my big girls a couple of weeks ago and love it, but haven't set it up for my babies yet. I hope to do that today! Mine pile up too! I keep adjusting the lamp thinking they are cold, but I figured they are just being silkies! My last one to hatch (the buff) is tiny, and last night it waited until everyone was piled and then went on the top of everyone! I think it knew if it was on the bottom it wouldn't do too well!

Hoping to get pictures today!

I gave my roosters crest a trim the other day and I don't think I did a good enough job. So, I took the scissors to his 'do again today and got his beard this time as well. I think (hope) that did the trick. He was VERY excited when I put him on the ground- scratching and calling to the girls. I picked up one of the hens for a cuddle after him and I do now believe he's feeling a little slight. I'm guessing that if he couldn't see well enough to feed himself properly there's no way he could breed either-poor guy. He dug right into the feed bowl as well. I hope after he's gotten himself into better condition he'll start crowing and mounting the hens again. I feel absolutely horrible that I didn't catch it before now :(

IMO, unless you are going to show them, trim the eye feathers so they can see. I am doing this with my breeders. I will stop trimming the cockerel I plan to show about 4mo before the show so he can grow them back.

My horses came for a closer look at the fluffy things which venture into their pasture sometimes. Sugar (with the blaze) is a Mustang/Paint cross (excuse her muddy knees, she likes to play in the pond) and Penny is a Morgan. The silkie could care less about the giant creatures sniffing her

Awwwwww. SO cute! Once my babies are big, I'll be seeing some of this, too. I can't wait! :D

Sounds great! I just never heard of it before. I know it's good for people though. :D I wish I was a better chicken mom and I would do fermented feed!
