Silkie thread!

Do silkies do well with the nipple waterers? I had ordered some for the whole flock, but wondering about my little silkie

My silkies love their's! I hung a bucket with three nipples on the bottom from a tree in their pen. They were so curious they were all around my feet. All I did was tap the nipples a few times while they were intrigued and they figured it out in minutes. Now they almost seem sad that they can't use it in the cold weather.

PaintedFeather how about a Great Pyrenees? They are very popular stock dogs around here. They are not constant barkers but will alarm to strangers or predators. I don't have one personally but there are at least 4 non-related males that I know of in a two mile radius of our place (all farms with livestock).

I also wanted to ask you - have you had Icelynn since she was a chick? I was wondering what color she was then and if she maintained her color since she was hatched.

Having been a dog groomer in my past life you couldnt give me an Old English Sheepdog!!! LOL! The Pyr might be good choice. I used to groom a big family of them . Nice dogs, not overly friendly but steady, they were never vocal in the shop... The Newfie cross might be something I would consider as well..... What not to get that is big and hairy.. an Afghan Hound :) Ophelia is not a LGD LOL!

I'm thinking this one is a winner! Love it! Just need to put an offer in, what does everyone think?

Looks perfect!!
Hi a have a silkie that is not really doing much its kinda in a ball shape with its head close to its body . I checked its crop and that's fine but I noticed it stinks does anyone know what might be wrong with it
Messy butt could indicate egg bound or internal infection.
Hi All,
I need some advice (or personal experience) about a situation. Last month many of you guys helped me recover a little chick with wry neck. She did recover from that, but now seems to have a type of straddle leg -only worse. (She is almost 3 months old and didn't have straddle leg as a baby chick.) One of her legs goes behind her like it is perhaps dislocated at the hip. She walks around as little as necessary to eat and drink. I don't know if she is suffering with pain. And, I don't know if the legs/hip can recover.

I fear that she has some very weak genetics as new issues keep coming up.

She is a beautiful "light blue" from my own rooster and hen so maybe I've selfishly overlooked her problems. I wanted her to be in my BBS pen but realize this would be a huge mistake.

I get so attached to my chickens and need to learn that I can't help or keep every one. Someone offered to "take care of her" for me. Should I let them do it?

I'm also concerned about Mareks. :( The other problem could be spinal deformity. Check to see if it's hips are the same height. It can show up very suddenly.
My gosh.. I'm offline for a couple of days and 121 new messages! Yikes!!

I don't think I'll have time to catch up with all of it just yet, but will do reading later today.
We've been busy here at the farm getting ready for our 8th annual Easter Egg Hunt! We have 6000 easter eggs. All filled with candy. And guess what? We had to fill them all by hand!

So this fun starts today at 11am! Should be fun. We'll have hoards of kids running around hunting for eggs.

And tomorrow, some of my students are having a bake sale at the feed store down the road to raise money for the farm. I think that's great!

They talked me into going with them incase they needed help...and they probably will. lol They're good kids so that should be fun also.

And some chicken related news! I a took an hour drive to go pick up 3 silkie chicks for my very, VERY broody hen going on 2 weeks now!
lol.png
They were supposed to be show quality but after seeing moms and dads....not so much! lol Too bad the guy couldn't send me pictures before I drove an hour each way. That's ok. They're darn cute and momma is one happy girl!

More chicken news! I'm entering two of my silkies to our very first show!

I took some to a fair last year but that doesn't count in my opinion. lol This will be a real show and it's only half an hour away from where I live. I've been waiting for this show for a year!

So, I'll be taking my Catdance chicks and going to a show in a few weeks. Wish me luck!
We will be looking forward to pictures of your show experience.

I'm thinking you are referring to their head crest? They just look like that. Don't have to do anything. :)
Thank you , yes it is . I had been trying to come up with a new Logo for my website and this is what I ended up with :)
I've been meaning to tell you how great it is!

Sooo pretty. Congratulations. My babies are from Bobbi, just love them.

Hello all. I got my first silkie almost a week ago. She was the only one that hatched. I couldn't leave her right? I was getting wheaten marans and she was the cutest. I never had such a tiny chick before. I'm hoping its a pullet, like most of us do. It's name is Itty Bitty. Here is a pic of my dog giving it a wash
Awww. Such a sweet moment.

My horses came for a closer look at the fluffy things which venture into their pasture sometimes. Sugar (with the blaze) is a Mustang/Paint cross (excuse her muddy knees, she likes to play in the pond) and Penny is a Morgan. The silkie could care less about the giant creatures sniffing her

Love this!!

Your photos are just adorable! So cute with the backdrop, flowers and teacups, and you gotta love the peeps!! :)

anyone have an opinion on having an LGD, or just a guard dog who is also good with the livestock, on .53 acres? The house we want (and pretty much the only option we have) is only on .53 acres =/ I really want a Komondor but it's close to the neighbors and they are known to bark a lot. There are Newfkoms who are mixes of Newfies and Komondors who would probably be quieter and I really like them but the only breeders one looks to be a puppy mill and the other is way too far away

any other ideas? I don't want thick fur, I like "hair'" that continuously grows. I also want a large dog.

I had a Doberman, just passed recently at 14. Short hair, but the pizza pan turned and left when he saw him. Someone from ADT security came, and wouldn't get out of the car. Told her I already had a security system. Was sweet with the other animals (liked to chase the horses, but all my dogs love that).
