Silkie thread!

I found my blue Silkie rooster, Mr. Wu, limp and pretty lifeless this morning when I went outside to let everyone out
sad.png

He's not been eating the way he should and when I trimmed his crest back I thought I'd solved the problem, but I guess not. I've got him inside in my brooded with a heat lamp and I'm trying to syringe feed him but he won't eat. He was fine when he went to bed last night, so I'm not sure what's going on. He was eating his FF like a little piggy yesterday too. I'm so upset, he's such a beautiful guy. I really don't think he's going to make ut, so at this point I'm just trying to make him comfortable until he gives up or I feel like I have to put him down. So sad. I've got 2 of his chicks growing out in the brooder and honestly now I'm hoping they're both boys.
My SIL gave me a rooster today though, a buff. He's a nice looking fellow and super sweet, but just doesn't compare to my wonderful Mr. Wu. He's got alot of smut in his tail, but nice dark skin and comb. Anyway, here's a quick pic I snapped of him. The girls are being pretty darn rotten to him right now, but I guess they'll get over it.

I think I'll hatch a few chicks from him and my porcelain girls just to see what comes if it, and after my brooder chicks mature enough to confirm ones a boy I'll then send him to a friend of mine that needs a Silkie roo. I'm so bummed

So very sorry about your boy.

This buff is quite a ball of fluff! Love his beard. :D

Thanks everyone, I went ahead and culled him. He looked like he was really suffering. He was such a good boy. I think him not seeing due to his really large crest is what did him in. I just don't think his body could catch up after I caught on to him being underweight.
I cut Al's (the buff rooster) crest as soon as I got him home. His crest and beard were huge just like Mr. Wu's so just to be sure, I took the scissors to him.
I really like him alot. On the way home from my SILs house he escaped from his box. When he got out he crawled right into my lap and stayed there until we got home :love He's a real sweetie. His personality more than makes up for all that smut in his tail. His back is so wide and his cushion is so big it makes him look perfectly round! I'm already leaning towards keeping him, my friend that wants him is going to disappointed

Now I am crossing my fingers for some roosters

Your buff looks awesome and I am glad you are keeping him.

I have quite a few silkies hatched over the last four months. One of them in the pic (small black one) is from America - in the post to the UK!

For some reason the other girls don't like these two so I moved them into their own quarters. They are very happy together.
A private suite...you can't beat that! They look happy.

Bought my first incubator! Have it running to check the temps. What should the temp be? Also how do you make humidity? It's a little giant still air incubator with an egg turner in it. I don't have a manual with it, I bought it used, so if anyone can give me a step by step on how to use it and the temp/humidity levels that would be awesome! I plan to set the eggs saturday so I am home if and when they hatch.
Have you checked the manufacturer's web site? Often they will have owner's manuals for their products available online.

Almost time to put the eggs in the bator
celebrate.gif
I could put them in tonight as long as it's stablized. Seems to be at the right temp now after a bit of tweaking and I found a hygrometer to use. Put it in there now. I did put a wet sponge and the wells have a little water in them. So i'm getting some mixed answers(or I just am not comprehending

) , what should the temp and humidity be at the different day marks?

Yes, the humidity should be different at different points of development. I usually keep it around 30% this time of year (I dry hatch during the warmer, more humid months). Then at lockdown (day 18, when you stop turning the eggs), up the humidity to somewhere around 50-60%. I'm in Va and these humidity levels work well for me, but you may need to tweak. Some folks go as high as 70% humidity during lockdown, but my chicks always drown if I let mine go that high since its usually already humid where I live when I run the bator. At this point, I'd take the bowl and sponge out, add it on day 18 when you want the humidity to be higher. Good luck, can't wait to see those babies!

Even with the water in it the humidity is at 35% =/ Hopefully I can get it to go up at day 18! But if the temps stabilize to around 100 to 101 I will put them in. I moved the bator to my livingroom because I realized where I had it (on top of my drier) the temps will go up whenever I do laundry. So now it's on my end table.
