Silkie thread!

Looks like no more sleep this morning...a noisy new chick in the incubator

lol! two more eggs pipped and hopefully 5 more to follow.

I entered what I thought was a grey silkie in a chicken show, but the judge wrote "Lemon Blue?" on the card, is there such thing as a lemon blue silkie? I will try to post pics of her tomorrow.
I've never heard of a lemon blue Silkie. Cochins and other breeds, sure, but not a Silkie?

I just had a thought as well..Gray is a standard color, correct? Could this also mean that the judge's "standards" of gray could be different?
Grey is a standard color.
Seems that there are different looking greys. I've had two myself. Never looked into the standard to see if they actually fit the standard because they were just pets.

This one was my grey hen. Gave her away to a friend.

Oh, I forgot about this hen we had. I think she's a grey too. lol

And my grey rooster, Curly.

They're all pet quality and have no breeding behind them. They just happened to come out this color.

If I'm not mistaken, my first hen (the dark one) is probably closest to the standard that you would see at a show? But with all these different variations, maybe the judges have different opinions also? I don't know. You see that in the horse show world all the time!

Just a question, do young silkies (14weeks) suppose to already have full leg feathers, or do they come with maturity? I have 3 just purchased silkies & they have fluffy feet but their legs arent completely covered yet?? First time silkie owner here.. Thanks

I think silkies are born with fully feathered legs or with the down anyways. I have 3 that are 10 wks old and 2 out of 3 have awesome leg feathering and the third is simply lacking. So it may just be genetics.

Here's the silkie that we got yesterday, but she doesn't look nearly as fluffy as the rest of the silkies on here. We were told she is about 5-6 weeks old and her feathers are just coming in. Is this accurate? Is she pure silkie? Will she look like the other fluffy silkies that are posted here? And is she even really a "she"? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!!

Hard to say on gender by this picture or at this age.

She is a silkie (saying she for good luck). She looks about 4-5 weeks old to me.

Thanks so much for the quick response! So, she IS silkie - but why is she not as fluffy as other silkie babies? Is this normal? Will she get big and fluffy?
Thanks again!

So I have taken Buck("special needs" Catdance boy) into the front yard on the grass the last 2 days, first time on it. He just stands there and wont move. It's kinda funny. My other flocks have never been in the front yard and since he is in quarantine it is ok for him to be out there. But he is so stinking sweet and loves to be petted and held. We trimmed his feathers around his eyes too so he can see better. Gonna start building the Silkie Pen when I get up today.

Buck sounds like such a sweet boy. Sounds like he landed in a dream forever home.

I still haven't gotten any photos of my little guy w/ wry neck,

but he was a little worse last night, Sunday when I got home he was looking at his bowtie, last night he was looking at his crop/belly, I got some of the Poly vi sol, and started giving it to him, I hope my DH will give him a dose this morning like I asked since I woke up late... I wish I could bring him to work to care and look after him... I need to work closer to home.

I also started to ferment some feed! When I stirred it this morning it smelled like the pizza crust I make from scratch! It smelled so good, I wanted to try a bite! My husband was watching while I was mixing it up, he thought I was crazy. I added the oregano, garlic and cayenne pepper as well as a "glug" of ACV w/ mother, am I doing this right? How soupy should it be? I think I may need to add more water to it tonight since it seems to have soaked up all the water that was on top when I left it last night...

I'm going shopping today for the ingredients to start my first batch of FF. Can't wait to let the girls try it!

Haven't visited the silkie thread for a good long while! Here are some pictures of my two white pullets I will be showing this month, although they look a lot more mature now (pics about a month old). I produced these two late last fall. And then my lone splash hen...will be showing her too but will probably sell her.
I have an incubator full of silkie eggs and three broodies on more, hopefully I will have more eggs to share before too long!
These two haven't started laying yet...

Gorgeous girls!

Here are pictures of my sweet blue silkie babies on the day we got them and yesterday! We got them from a fellow BYC member. They are our favorite birds. I was wondering if there was any way to begin to discern gender, They are very different looking birds. the lighter is B-Mo, and the darker is Lorraine (hopefully). I think they are just beautiful! Any advice would be really helpful! Thank you!

Cute!

I just love silkies!!!!! There so adorable! I have a blue silkie and she's as calm as they come! .... Well I think it's a female... I'm not sure yet?? But I named her Chickie lol
