Silkie thread!

That sounds good.  I was thinking about it- would it hurt it when the other's go into lockdown, and are not being turned anymore?  And the humidity higher?

I've had several successful staggered hatches but I use the dryincubation method so the humidity wouldn't be too much of a problem. To me when I stop turning one batch I stop turning the others aswell and they do wonderfully. I have a batch due monday that was apart of a staggered hatch for a week ( had some batches that were 2-3 days apart) so they had no turning for 7 days and I haven't had one quitter yet. :)

I wouldn't stagger it...mostly because of the reasons you gave, higher humidity for the first batch may affect the second, and you couldn't turn the younger eggs when the older eggs went into lockdown. I know people have had success, but I myself wouldn't try it

Well, I have a death to report.

Of course, it's the one named silkie I have. My famed Macho. He cheated death once but not twice. I think it was another head injury from chasing hens, he had no mark on him and there was no blood. I'm going to miss him, but I'm not absolutely devastated for breeding. I've sort of fallen 'out of love' with him over the past few weeks. I've started to like my other roo more. He has a better crest, beard, comb, and much better foot feathering. He also is much more successful mating with the hens and I believe the chicks I have are all his based on their crests. Don't get me wrong, I'm going to miss my proud, chesty, 'heart boy' a lot. I'll miss his hen-chasing antics and tinny, squeaky crow. I'll miss the way he would suddenly freeze and strike a pose with his chest puffed out as much as possible. I buried him beneath our old mulberry bush (that is large enough to be a tree) and it was very sad having to bury all that beautiful fluff go beneath the soil. Here's to quite possibly the proudest silkie on earth. Bye my big sweet boy

I didn't think it was good for birds... but thinking back, I should add uncooked... because it expands, that was the reason

. I don't know if rice in FF would expand being in the water if it isn't hot?... if you use rice I would go with boiled brown or whole grain though.
i know that with baby ducks u cant feed them any raw grain because they will swell in their belly but idk if thats the same with chicks but i used brown rice and next time will be cooking it before adding it in because i dont think it got cooked good enough

thats what i just did with mine, had it laying around so i will let you know how it works. just made my own batch of feed, but i will probably renew it once a week because my food has animal protein. dont want it going bad!
