Silkie thread!

After having my broodies hatch out some mixed eggs from a friends farm I have discovered that I am the proud owner of a to be light coloured silkie. Is "whats-it" going to be okay with alot of other standard sized girls? Is there a way to sex them? I dont even think I have ever seen what a silkie roo would look like, other then fluffy!! "Whats-it" is in with the other chicks.....has 2 other siblings (Australorpes) and momma is treating it just the same. Just want to know what I might have to change in my coop with 4' roosts and nesting boxes about 2' off the ground. This is of course if whats-it is a girl!!

A chromosome. One copy in each of a pair of chromosomes. Many genes per chromosome, many chromosomes per bird (39 pairs for a chicken).

Yeah, you know, I took me a lot of work to get through my required Bio 1 class in college! lol. Some day I will get it. Im a visual learner, words don't work... 6 years of college told me that, haha! But thanks for giving an exceptional effort trying to help me out. Your knowledge here is such an asset. Thanks for sharing!

Hello fellow animal lover! I too had a horrifying incident when two feathered beasts come together!!! My beautiful big splash silkie rooster was picked up by a huge big eagle and carried away before my eyes!!! Absolutely horrified I was!! And his harem of girls headed for the coop in a screaming spray of feathers an poo !!! Lol. Can laugh now, but at the time..... !!!!

Oh Im so sorry. That's terrible!

Does anyone know where you can buy a sexed silkie chick???

I have tried a couple times to raise a silkie chick and I get super attached and it always ends up being a rooster!!!

I want one I know will be a girl!
You need to either get an older chick or you can pay for genetic testing but that would get expensive if you had to test several to get a pullet. Where are you located? Maybe someone could put you in touch with someone that has one old enough to tell.

I gave my Porcelain Silkie roo a bath this morning in prep for the annual county fair. I noticed he has these little white bumps on his comb. Can anyone tell me what these are and how to get rid of them! Thanks in advance!!

You would have to get it DNA sexed, not that expensive for a single chick, but if you want a group ( or to keep testing until you FIND a girl) done it would probably be cost prohibitive. Might want to get a older bird that can be sexed by appearance.

"What's It" will be fine. About the only time you are likely to have issues is if you are adding a single young silkie to an adult flock that has never seen silkies, with no one to watch over and make sure the flock behaves.

I get these calcified nodules, too, and gently remove them with a toothpick. They are easiest to remove while the bird is still wet from a bath. There can be mites in the nodules, but not always. After you remove them (and they are usually larger below the surface), oil the comb with a light oil.

I FOUND SAND!!!!

I never knew I'd be so excited to find sand! lol We had a big mountain of nice sand right here on the farm. I knew there was gravel and wood chips, didn't think we had sand but surprise! I lugged 3 wheelbarrows, half filled, to my little Cochins. Omg, I almost died.

That stuff is really heavy when it's wet and pushing a heavy wheelbarrow up hill isn't fun. Next time I'll have someone take the tractor out for me and scoop up some sand. I'll just shovel it into the pen. Save me a lot of hours and work. lol
But I have sand!! I think I'll take some out for the Silkies also if this works out well.

Can you tell if this chick is bearded? Or is it too early. I ordered blues from ideal hatchery and they came this morning (only a couple blacks and maybe 1 splash, will take a group pic) and the look to have puffier faces than the assorted colors I got two weeks ago.
Bearded

I have 4 (eleven) week old silkies. Two buffs, two whites. I was wondering how big their egg size is. Ive heard that peoples silkies can lay everyday. Is one Silkie breed better than another as far as egg laying goes?
