Silkie thread!

Yes, you can get SQ birds from that breeding - I would say the whites probably would have the best chance of being SQ You will need to wait until the chicks are all grown up to determine who is show quality though - so I wouldn't sell chicks calling them that... but Breeder Quality (assuming you don't throw any with 4 toes) would be fine.

Ok everyone. I am considering gettin this too to show and be my pet. He is 4 months and 13 days and has 5 toes and the person does not know about the breed tht much but he said he thinks he has a rosé comb but not sure. Any comments?

He would be a cute pet - but until we see him standing flat footed on the ground and see his regular stance we will not know if you would want to show him. Pictures should be from the side so you can evaluate his stance - how he holds his head, length of back and position of wings and tail. Also - 4 months old is usually too young to tell - 6 months to a year old is better. Does the owner have pictures of his parents? That will at least tell you if he has the potential to be a show bird.

If the price is right and you like him, then go ahead and get him.

He should have a "walnut" comb - not a rose comb.. so if he doesn't look correct I would not show him. However, you said they don't know much about Silkies - so he might have the correct Walnut Comb.

I got them from a farm here in town. She breeds chickens, turkeys and goats. We live in Milton Mills, so don't know if that's too far of a drive for you. She also has Silkies (white I know , not sure of any other colors) .....I got my 2 from her :) They are now 6 wk old, but I think she had more hatching....
These are the two fluffballs at 2 wks old <3

Hi everyone, I have a question for the experts.

I just received a shipment of Silkie chicks (I buy from hatcheries to resell locally) and one little black chick has a very obvious leg deformity. It looks like the knee joint is locked in a bent position, probably where it was positioned in the egg. Is there a good treatment for this? Is it likely to loosen up over time or is this likely a permanent Issue? I know Silkies are prone to feet deformities so I was thinking this might be a somewhat common issue for the breed.

Any advise is appreciated.

The chick otherwise seems healthy and full of energy.

You plan on selling them soon?

I normally wait a few days with healthy chicks to be sure they are recovered from shipping and hold onto deformed/sick ones until they are healthy, I find a home that will love them anyway (cross beaks mostly and either given for free or discounted) or until I have to humanly euthanize. This is the first chick I have had with this problem. If it takes a month or two to fix that is fine. Even regular treatments like stretching exercises wouldn't be horrible, I would just need to find the right home for the little one.

If you found the right home for the little hurt one would you ship him?

Honestly, I would be willing to when its older if s/he still needs special care but I would need that new family to pay the shipping costs. Last time I looked at shipping it was about $20ish for a box plus $20ish postage. I wouldn't charge for the little one itself but I can't afford to pay $40-$50 to give a chick a new home. :( Wish I could but DH was out of work the last few months (he has a job again, just starting today!) and I am a stay at home mom / chicken entrepreneur, so there isn't a lot of wiggle room in our finances.
