Silkie thread!

I wish my experience was similar.  I have 4 standard-size chickens and one in the middle of the pecking order (a Black Sex Links) picks on my two black bantam silkies.  They spend most of the day in the coop, chased there whenever they try to go to the run.  I'm at the point where I'm going to try to place the silkies with another household to improve their quality of life.  Of course, as bantams, they're small in build..  Anyone in the Kent, WA area want a pair?

I am in Covington and I have Silkies. If you want me to keep yours for you I would take good care of them and you could visit.

I have a funny little bearded silkie pullet. I'm not sure that she can see much , but as soon as she hears me say " here chicky chicky " she presents herself to me . I stroke her while she eats and that seems to make her very happy. Love my silkies!!

I got my first 2 silkies this spring and I am in love. When I went to the farm to pick them up the seller could not sex them for me so we just picked out 2 hoped they would grow up and get along. Three months later I am sure I have a rooster and a hen.

That's my rooster out front. My girl in the back is the one that brings my question today. I told the seller my grandson wanted a black silkie and when we brought her home she was black. But as you can see she is not a true black silkie. I have found another breeder and this time asked more questions. I told her what happened the first time about not getting the color we wanted and she said if she sold me a black it would be black. She also has a blue and that one I would love to have. I will be calling her again soon to set up a time to visit her farm and look at her flock and maybe bring back another baby. What should I ask or look for to help make sure the birds I buy will be the colors I want?
I don't care about showing them at all. I just like what I like and want to get what I want.

Then another question this one is on breeding. Where I got these 2 from the seller had many colors all together. She had some very pretty splash ones. If these guys do breed could I maybe get some other colors?

The crop is actually ahead of the stomach in the digestive tract. It is kind of a holding place for the food they eat. Not all that different than the cheek pouches of squirrels and chipmunks.
It's been a week and the wee one seems to be holding her own. No more spewing water back up. As before normal eyes, poo, smell etc. I have no clue what her deal was, but she has moved past it. I gave both a bath and now it's hard to imagine they are even more fluffier lol

Fancy,
I had a hen like that she would wait for my other silkies to leave and knew I would carry her out and would cluck very contentedly, she was a diva of the best kind:)

Ask to see the rooster and hen, if she doesn't know which hen and rooster that chick came from you won't know what the possibilities of colors might be. There is a chart listing all the possibilities with breeding colors, my guess is your chickens parents one may of been a partridge color.

Oh, I had another random question haha. Well, two actually.

a) How much do nicely marked splash pullets go for? I'd be looking for SQ or close to it as a pet (I want my darn pretty pretty splash!).

b) What's shipping cost like? I've only ever had day old chicks shipped in, so I'm not sure how it differs for grown birds.

Thanks guys. <3
A pet quality splash can be every bit as gorgeous as a SQ splash with a $100 or more price difference. Many show disqualifications like a missing toe are not visible unless you look for it. Shipping for a pullet is usually $55 - $70.

Ok, Thanks. Very helpful. Do you give your silkies a bath just before a show or do you do it when they get dirty
If I plan on showing my birds, I bathe them the day before. Sometimes two days before if I don't have the time for baths the night before the show. Other than that, I rarely bathe my Silkies. Maybe for a photo op.

Or if their butts get really dirty.

Don't let them out in the rain!

Seriously though, Mine have gone out plenty of times in the rain, especially my Roo when he's out with the bigger girls because I like to give the silkie hens a break from him every once in a while. And to be honest, I don't do a thing to clean them up. I was so surprised the first time he went out in the rain, how beautiful he looked the next day. It's like he had gone to the groomer! He had dried off and preened himself so nicely that I don't mind him going out in the rain. I leave it for him to decide. I used to have a while silkie hen that did the same thing - went out in the rain and I couldn't believe what a mess she looked like, thought I'd never get her looking nice again. Went out the next morning to get her and clean her up - she looked better than ever! It was a nice shower for her!
Your birds must have been good at staying clean.
