Silkie thread!

This one looks like partridge . If your polish had access to your silkie hen , anything is possible.
I watched a rather large light sussex roo mount a silkie, and I have a silkie roo who is besotted with a gold laced Wyandotte .

Thank u!! I Thot that little one might be partridge but I've never had one!! I'm so excited! I will have to take pics of that little white with dark patches and keep everyone updated. I'm excited to see how she turns out too. I will love them all tho. Thanks for the help!!!!!this is who my silkie is supposed to be with, but maybe she ran around the yard a few times. Haha!!

I think I liked Ella better before she started laying eggs. She didn't lay yesterday and the pen stayed clean. Today I found that she pulled all the hay out of the nest box and spread it all over the sand portion of the pen, shredded the newspaper lining their little "coop," tossed the pieces everywhere, then laid her egg beside the waterer on some of the shredded newspaper. And I found Thunderhead wedged between the waterer and the side of the pen, soaked up one side because he had one foot in the water. I'm glad the rest of the flock's outside instead of in my mudroom!

I set up Ella's nest box with some shredded newspaper and golf balls, hoping she'll accept that and take a hint that eggs belong there. She seems to think small pieces of newspaper are better to lay eggs on than hay. And it's the good hay I give my guinea pigs--second cut timothy, which is very soft.

That is so funny!! Its amazing how wet they can get!! I remember when I first went to buy a couple silkies, and the lady had nesting boxes with hens laying inside them....and outside them...on nothing. Haha!! What good mommas. The shredded paper is funny. My hen will get confused sometimes when she gets out to eat/drink/poop she will accidentally go into the box next to her nest and just sit down!? I just pick her grumpy puffed out self up and move her over! Silly girls..

I have a breeding question, I hope someone can help me. I don't have a whole lot of birds right now, and I have various breeds, so I'm kinda limited a bit as far as how many and of each color and I'm not going to have 1 rooster of every color of every breed that I have. If I were to breed a hen to a roo and then seperate them, how long would I need to wait before putting her in w/a different colored roo if I wanted to try a dif. breeding route? For example, human sperm can live for 4-5 days, is it the same for chickens? I want to know what eggs are from which roo and what colors to expect. Thanks!

The male chicken sperm can continue to fettilize a hens eggs for up to a month. The freshest sperm is usually what hits the eggs furthest along in the oviduct but there could still be the possibility of multiple fathers. I remove cocks from the breeding pen and let the hens rest for a month to continue laying eggs before I introduce a new male. Often I wait longer to be sure.

Hi glad you asked this question and dont mean to hijack your post, but I was wondering how long you leave your birds in the breeding pen for gor best chance of fertile eggs?

To be absolutely certain, keep her separated for a full month or more. Hens can hold on to sperm for a LONG time.

I would like some help determining my "hens" sex. She came with two rooster brothers who were obnoxious and always picking on her. Once or twice I had to stop the less dominant Roo from mounting "her". Now I don't know if she's a SHE because she's been crowing (a sad broken little warble), and I swear her comb and waddle have gotten bigger.
