Silkie thread!

yeah.... while I wouldn't mind that, hubby would NOT go for it!  plus, I have parrots, and I'd be afraid some sort of chicken germ would cross with my parrots :)

Oh well then lol just a thought. You could give her company. Pick a low ranking member for her to pal around with. Maybe it'll encourage her to walk and get excerise

ohhh. now, that is a good idea! I might just give her a buddy!

Oh my goodness! that chick is NOT dead! it is now pipping. I hope I didn't screw it up. I was so convinced that it was dead, should have started pipping last night, I hear NO peeping, and no rocking, nothing. just acting dead. So I took it out to see if it had a blood ring, tapped on it. shined a light inside. Convinced it was dead. and now it is pipping. hopefully I didn't mess it up since it was supposed to be in lock down mode.

Sometimes I find they pip better when there is some movement or noise around them. I leave one chick in with the hatching eggs to encourage them. I have had one hatch after doing the float test - it was 3 days late and no noise - I floated it and it floated and moved ever so slightly - put it back and out it came!

that it too funny! wow!!!! I took it out and I tapped on it, I shook it a little, I talked to it, I peeped at it hahaha. yeah, I'm pathetic. I thought for sure it was a gonner. and I'm not kidding, 30 min later I checked on it and it pipped! I am so shocked~!

what is this float test? I've never heard of it!

oh, and you're totally right. I am yelling PEEP PEEP PEEP PEEP PEEP! at the incubator and it moves like crazy.

Quote: If you have an egg you think is a dud when the others are hatching (day 22 or so) you get a deep bowl or wide cup with enough area for an egg to be suspended in it and fill it up with warmish water (about 100 deg) and put the egg in the water. If if floats and wiggles by itself you know its alive - because the heartbeat of the chick will wiggle the egg in the water. If it bobs about rapidly there is a chick moving in there. If it sinks to the bottom its a dud or rotten egg - toss it and DO NOT OPEN IT. If you get movement you dry it off and put it back in the incubator. Do not do this if you have a crack in the shell or a pip - it will drown the chick.

I have had a egg not move at all in the water test, thought for sure it was dead put it back anyway and it hatched a couple days later!

We are in Sauquoit, Ny and we get COLD and blowing snow.
We have a large heavy gray tarp covering our run.
Keeps the snow and wind out.

We left just a small opening for ventilation in the front.
Works fine. Regards, Aria

WOW! that is great! I wish I had known about this when I wasn't sure about the ones that didn't hatch a few months back, I have 2 hens sitting on 12 eggs, and nothing came out :( I tossed them in the woods. it would have been better to do the float test to be sure.

WOW!!!! that is impressive. awww, I just love these little chicks!

seems like chick is pipping and zipping as fast as it can. I've never seen one go this fast before! hopefully it will take a break for a bit.
