Sounds like she may have a blockage? Is there any other egg you can feel besides the one she layed? She may not be able to poo on her own and it's backing up =/I have no vets around me who deal wih birds..chickens. But I held her upside down and yellow liquid came out.
also she seemed constipated. I squeezed her butt when I bathes ger and a lot came out.
sour crop maybe? The smell isn't too bad..idk
Looks like a splash chick to me. Love mine
Well this morning the little white one was just sitting in the brooder with her eyes half shut and lethargic. I brought all 3 silkies into the house under a heat lamp. The blue one is fine, the white one was getting around but wobbly and mouth breathing and breathing hard. The little black one was face planted in the house brooder. He fell onto his back trying to scratch and I thought he wasn't going to make it. I ran to town and got the antibiotics and put it in the water. I eye dropped the water to the little weak ones and waited. They seemed to perk up. Then my husband went to look at them and said the white one didn't look so good and was making a clicking noise. I pcked her up and she was outh breathing and the clicking was her trying to breath. I sat her down and she fell over. picked her up and sat her down again and she reared back. I picked her back up and she panicked and dies in my hand. I think she aspirated. I don;t know itf I did it eye dropping water to her, she did drink, or if she already had the fluid in her lungs. As the day progressed I kept checking on the other little one. He is doing better tonight. He can scratch without falling and is eating a little. No more wheezing. Yesterday I let momma dust bathe with the little ones. It was wood ash and sand. Someone on the indiana thread said the ash may have caused respiratory problems since they slept under her after she used it. The blue silkie and the three LF chicks are fine. They 3 LF are still out in the brooder with momma. I separated them because they are growing like weeds and the silkies are still tiny. I have 14 silkie eggs due to hatch in the next 2 day under a silkie in the coop. I am worried about it being something other than a fluke.I would get her to a bird vet if you can =(
What are the symptoms?
thanks! none of my other splashes had little spots like that, I think it is SO cute!Looks like a splash chick to me. Love mine![]()
Okay. I only have a TSC here so I don't know what they have for meds. Chance is eating like a champ and getting around pretty well tonight. I think whatever it was we got it in time with him. I will clean out the brooder in the barn tomorrow. Get momma cleaned up. Thanks for your help. It's always difficult to loose the little ones. Upper respiratory symptoms can be triggered by many different circumstances. In the absence of a good " avian " vet it comes down to a process of elimination and the experience of others. The dust may well be the culprit. As I said previously , I would wash the hen, because she will be retaining the dust in her feathers and dander. If you are not seeing any symptoms in the older members of your flock, ( sneezing , fluid in nostrils and or wheezing ) then you shouldn't be concerned about your pending hatch. It's a personal decision to feed , or not to feed medicated food.
I hatch lots of chicks , so I feed medicated food. I have had a goat die from cocci, that was under veterinary care. I don't know if cocci is your underlying problem , but if I were you , I would be giving a preventative course of amprolium . I hope that you can get to the bottom of this.![]()
