Silkie thread!

I got a bunch of new silkies on the 26th of October and one was broody when I bought her. I have no rooster nor fertile eggs, but she came from a flock of roosters so the day after I got her, Sunday, the 27th of October, I was shocked to see she had laid an egg. I decided to let her sit on it since it may have had the potential to hatch. As it turns out, she isn't a really good broody mother because every time I checked on her the egg would be directly sitting in front of her and she would think she was sitting on it but it wasn't. This went on for about five days until I decided to try my luck with an incubator. I highly doubted that the egg would still be viable after constantly being left out in the cold, but I gave it a try anyways. It was either the 31st or the 1st that I put it in the incubator and the second day in, the incubator lost power for at least 8 hours. I thought for sure the egg was dead, but since then I think I can see a developing embryo in the egg, however I am awful at candling so I can't be completely sure. Anyways, I have kept it in their despite the many mistakes that have occurred and I am trying to determine when to increase the humidity. The egg could potentially hatch any time from this Saturday, the 16th, to this upcoming Friday, the 22nd. You are supposed to increase the humidity two days before, right? When is suggested? I don't know when the embryo started developing, especially with so many temperature fluctuations.... Please any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Eggs are amazing. They will sometimes hatch even when everything goes wrong. Candle the egg on Friday and try and determine how far the embryo is. If it looks all dark with an air cell then stop turning the egg and increase the humidity ONLY after the egg has actually pipped the outer shell. Since you don't know development stage increasing it too early can drown the chick. It only needs the humidity after it breaks the outer shell - until that time it needs air more than the humidity. An egg that is developing can turn itself inside the egg once it reaches a certain stage - I think after 14 days, so that part should be ok.

Is your girl still broody or did she quit? Usually I move my broody girls to break them, its interesting that moving them to your house didn't stop her.

are there any white black blue or splash bantam breeders on here close to sacramento?

Hello there, All American Silkies are Bantams. We don't have Large Fowl Silkies in the States.

There is a lady in Lincoln that has Silkies. I don't know what she has available right now, but her birds are beautiful. She is http://www.californiacountryranch.com/

If you are asking about other kinds of Bantams then I don't know the answer.

Here's my little Clarice after her bath tonight. She's going to visit with the vet that helped me make her feeding tube and show how much progress she's made :). She is at 1.5 lbs now, which I think is a good weight for being 5 months old.

Still not eating on her own though, and NOTHING has worked in getting her interested. *shrug*

She looks good =D 1.5 lbs is the standard weight for a pullet, I wouldn't try to make her gain any more.

........should keep me busy this winter........
I only just learned they are banty:s.......... Which makes sense because the eggs were only slightly
larger than my Serama eggs....
I do know this....they are the sweetest chicks.....so calm........
I have 4 silkies in the brooder with 5 Seramas giving me the opportunity to see the difference
in personality.........it is significant...
I am going to post updated pictures later today.......=)
