What do you have available? I just got some beautiful blue cockerels yesterday. ;-) Thanks. Pam Pittman they are doing great.
yeah that should be fine, as long as they are dry before night time. Silkies seem to love rain. I find even though their feathers don't wick off water like normal feathers, they "matt" when they get wet and make a protective layer to keep their down dry.Hi![]()
I am a new Silkie owner, having bought 5 fertile eggs for my Broody Bantam Black Cochin and now have 5 x 5 week old Silkie chicks. They are in a covered (not waterproof) run with their Mum and Aunty. They do have a few places to shelter if it is raining.
I live in Australia (Queensland) and we are just at the start of our sub-tropical season when we get some afternoon storms and rain. A couple of times it has rained I have been home and hustled them into their totally dry coop and shut the door because I heard they should not get wet as they could catch a chill? I am hoping if it is raining they will run to their coop of their own accord but I have also read that they can be silly enough to stay out in the rain. I work so I am not always here if it rains,
So basically, is it OK for them to get wet? Especially as we live in Australia and it does not really get that cold?

some of my silkies just stand in the rain. Haha! I have rushed out in the rain several times since it was a heavy rain and instead of going in the coop where its totally dry, some were huddled under a tree still getting soaked. Lol I Thot it was funny. But. I usually use a towel or low heat dryer on low. If its warm outside, and they aren't soaked I just put them up. But my turkeys are always trying to drown themselves so I've had to run in the rain more thanThank you![]()
I had images of myself getting soaked every time I rushed out to hustle them under cover and as I said, sometimes I won't be home to do that.
Sorry, one more question, if they do get wet close to bed time what is the bed way to dry them? Just a towel?
Thank you lflynn5324; the responses so far have certainly reduced my concerns. I was starting to think these Silkies were going to be like Gremlins; do not get wet!some of my silkies just stand in the rain. Haha! oh once I got my Silkies I've never gone back. They are such sweethearts and I spoil them. Lol they have the best disposition of any bird I've had. Im glad your enjoying them too!! One of my silkie hens found 2 eggs from my other hens and is now in momma broody mode. Haha! So more babies!! Take care!!Thank you lflynn5324; the responses so far have certainly reduced my concerns. Actually, I was thinking, a chamois might be a good way to get the moisture off them and much gentler than a towel.
Oh yeah, they are so adorable! Their 'mum' is a Bantam Black Cochin and Aunty is a Bantam Langshan and as I said, these are my first Silkies but most definitely not my last .. I love them to bits!![]()
