Silkie thread!

Well, sorry but I am mad.

You have every right to be mad!! Some people have no idea what they're talking about. Others have no idea what they're selling. Apparently the ebayer you bought from is one of them. Of course they could've known all along & misled you.

That happened to me last spring when I paid WAY more than a few dollars for what I was led to believe were "Purebred SQ White Ameraucana eggs." Imagine my shock when I hatched 2 chicks out of 16 eggs & they had bright green legs!!!!!

Easter Eggers!!!!! After emailing several times, I was told that the seller was "out of the country" and would contact me when he returned. Needless to say, I got no satisfaction.

Wow I'd be fuming over that too! Did you pay with paypal? Could you have filed a dispute since the "product" you received was not what you paid for?

I'm not up to date with cuckoo breeding but did they disclose that there was a chance of hatching non cuckoo chicks in the auction? I think if they didn't they at least owe you some eggs or a partial refund. JMHO

No they did not say there could be a chance of getting black chicks but stated in the auction they had a cuckoo roo over 3 cuckoo hens and 1 cuckoo split hen.

The hens I don't know their background and the blue one I hatched out from mine and I was told they did have a lavender background but none have turned out the slightest bit light. They all turned out partridge, blue, blue splash and black. My roo I was told was a black lavender split but have since found out that isn't what he is. I was told he was grey and splash. I really don't know which he is. So I can count on not getting any lavender chicks with those two. I'm guessing i'll get splash. I'll find out if I decide to put them together.

My partridge hen which is a year old now has changed appearance after her molt. She had a black breast and gold on her back and a real puffy head. Now she has what looks like brown on her back and her head has a don king look. I can actually see her eyes now. And she's going broody again too.

I know they change after molt but I think that was a bit drastic.

OK, you've confused me. Which birds are supposed to be carrying the lavender gene?

If any of them are carrying it you have to breed the offspring back to the parents to see who might be carrying a copy of lavender. The problem is you said, blue and splash. Those are two of the worst colors to breed lavender to. Even if you got one to hatch out light you can't know for certain its lavender since the lighter tone of blue of some Silkies is visually very much like the lavender.

Kasey08 has a pic in the lavender section of a light blue hen. If you see it you think lavender. But I know who the breeder is and know that there is no lavender in that bird.

Ok, I bought a bunch of eggs and got about 7 chicks to hatch. All where dark in color. They are a year old and spent the winter laying and hatching eggs. The parents I have are blue, blue splash, black and the roo is black with white on his head to his shoulders. Looks like paint was poured over his head. Anyway the person I got the eggs from that some of them came from lav splits. The blue one and the roo actually where the ones that had lav split on the eggs. They apparently are siblings and I bread them and got alot of pullets and cockereals form them but only kept a few. I kept a blue cockereal and a pair of blacks.

The other 2 splash hens I got from the auction, they look to me as if they are lav splash. There may not be such a color but that's what color they appear to be. They aren't a blue splash. I don't know their background.

I did see the pics your talking about and I did think that one was lavender. Silkie colors are so confusing to me. They are very complicated. I can put them together to find out what they produce, I guess. I doubt I would get a lavender. If I could get my hands on a lav roo that would solve the issue. I was told if I put those 2 hens with a lav roo I would get lav chicks. But not 100% of course.

ur first clue is there no such thing as a cuckoo split so the breeder didnt know what they where talking about

Ugh that's frustrating... I can see how that would be misleading. I'm assuming the split hen would give you a chance of black like the seller said but if cuckoo is anything like lav that would mean you'd have 50/50 odds of hatching a cuckoo out of that hen. Idk I think I'd still ask for a partial refund or a discount on eggs since they weren't very specific all they can do is tell you no. IMO they should have spelled it out in their auction if they were advertising cuckoo silkie eggs that way the buyer knew exactly what to expect, that indeed they *might* not hatch out all cuckoo chicks. That's just how I would have done it.

You are right I am new to the cuckoo coloring I loved the color wanted to work on it. I'v heard of people using blacks to improve quality. I was also told that if a cuckoo male was used all offspring would be cuckoo thats why it confuses me. If thats so the roo is cuckoo and the hen black should result in cuckoo offspring. They said they never heard from ANYONE that they had any black chicks hatch. I don't believe that.

He put me off till it was too late. That was back when I thought people were honest. I hate to sound so cynical -- but I had asked a ton of questions before buying them & was thrilled right until they hatched. The next white Ameraucana eggs I bought were from the president of the Ameraucana club & are perfect.

I bought cuckoo silkie eggs at the same time Theresa did. I had a good hatch. They were labelled B for Black & C for Cuckoo. The number of cuckoo eggs that hatched matches the number of cuckoo chicks except for one odd but very cool looking chick. The black chicks look like excellent quality as well.

The following week I got porcelain silkie eggs from an ebayer who is also on BYC. Some of the eggs were labelled lavender, which was not expected, but I was ok with it. One egg hatched - marked as a porcelain. If I have a porcelain chick, I'll eat my boots! There is nothing with porcelain coloring in my brooders. So I have a $55 chick & the only thing the breeder offered to do is send me more of these "mystery eggs" for an additional $30!

And this is why I'm cynical...... getting tired of snake oil salesmen.
