Silkie thread!

Here is a pic of Sassy. My hubby just went and got her for me today. She is a year old and I was told she hasn't layed eggs that is why they got rid of her. I am already in love with her she has so much personality! :love Does anyone know if I could/should cut around her eyes or should I leave it?
Adorable. So long as you aren't intending to show , it can change their entire outlook.

oh, maybe once you trim her eyes, she'll be able to see enough to get enough food to make you some eggs! Lol

When I clip my flocks nails I use a small pair of dog nail clippers, works like a charm and it never splits the nail, just a nice clean clip every time:}

Using the hand clippers I clip at an angle pointing toward the toes so I'm not clipping straight across the thickest part of the nails so they don't crack or split. But someone said they used a dremel tool for sanding the nails and beak for shows - forgot I had a Dremel given to me as a gift a couple years ago so got to find it!

She is absolutely gorgeous! I love her crest, beard, toe feathering, and color. I just hope and wish to find a couple like this soon enough.

ihad to go take care of some business today when i got home one of my babies had died it was doing so good this morning

How old was the baby?

We lost a Dominique chick at 19 days to an ugly seizure. She went to bed in her little nestbox like always every evening at 7 p.m. with her "blankie", then she screamed and thrashed around in the bottom of her cage at about 7:20 p.m. and before my DH could pick her up she lay still and gone by the time he gently lifted her up. We were quick to get to her but she was gone even quicker.

In hindsight she was fine all day eating and running around but we saw her picking at her right leg just a little before we put her in her blankie box and she settled down sweetly like she always did. She must have already had twinge feelings of the impending stroke/seizure at that time around 7 p.m. but she wanted to go to her bed and then the stroke hit at 7:20. We were just glad it was quick and didn't have to watch a sick wasting away chick like some.

I am new to chickens and silkies. I have a question, I have 3 hens that just now started laying, and I have a black showgirl rooster in with them, but he is almost 4 months old and crowing. How old are silkie/showgirl roosters before they start breeding. Sorry if this is a silly question. Just curious. Thanks

My boy surprised us jumping his sister at 7 months.

I don't cut anything off on any breed of chicken I have whether it's wing feathers, oversized muffs on the Ameraucana, or extra fluff around the Silkies' eyes. Eventually they clear a viewing path on their own. Our 2 Silkies kissy pick around the face (not mean) and in a couple days they both can see where they're going LOL.

That's interesting about her not laying eggs. Is this something hormonal? Will it affect her health? My poor Partridge started laying at 6 1/2 months and didn't stop until 18 months. Then it took her a long time to start up again but I didn't mind because she never went broody that whole year of laying 5-6 eggs/week. She's 3 years old now and we get about 2-3 eggs/week but we figure she earned the rest.

If you had a dozen roos your opinion on wing clipping might be quite different. I have clean faced and bearded silkies and I can say without hesitation that the clean faced ones are much better rounded than the bearded. The bearded often walk into me and freak out, they are often more nervy and jumpy .Plenty of breeders trim around the eyes , some even hold the fluff up with elastic hair bands between shows. If your birds free range and they can't see they are at a distinct disadvantage .
