2-3 weeks i think maybe 1of the older 2 had been picking on it. i had noticed a red place on its side just above the wing but it seemed to be ok running around and eating goodHow old was the baby?
We lost a Dominique chick at 19 days to an ugly seizure. She went to bed in her little nestbox like always every evening at 7 p.m. with her "blankie", then she screamed and thrashed around in the bottom of her cage at about 7:20 p.m. and before my DH could pick her up she lay still and gone by the time he gently lifted her up. We were quick to get to her but she was gone even quicker.
In hindsight she was fine all day eating and running around but we saw her picking at her right leg just a little before we put her in her blankie box and she settled down sweetly like she always did. She must have already had twinge feelings of the impending stroke/seizure at that time around 7 p.m. but she wanted to go to her bed and then the stroke hit at 7:20. We were just glad it was quick and didn't have to watch a sick wasting away chick like some.
I don't cut anything off on any breed of chicken I have whether it's wing feathers, oversized muffs on the Ameraucana, or extra fluff around the Silkies' eyes. Eventually they clear a viewing path on their own. Our 2 Silkies kissy pick around the face (not mean) and in a couple days they both can see where they're going LOL.
That's interesting about her not laying eggs. Is this something hormonal? Will it affect her health? My poor Partridge started laying at 6 1/2 months and didn't stop until 18 months. Then it took her a long time to start up again but I didn't mind because she never went broody that whole year of laying 5-6 eggs/week. She's 3 years old now and we get about 2-3 eggs/week but we figure she earned the rest.
