Silkie thread!

Hi - yes in your situation with such a large flock and bevy of aerial predators in your area that would be to your advantage. In my 4-hen backyard flock it hasn't been necessary. I have a jittery spooky kooky jumpy scaredy cat APA Ameraucana who can see fine but still spooks and runs into things. From my sharing with others who have the same breed it is just a breed characteristic and she'd still run into things if she was completely bald LOL.

I love love my bearded silkies..and no, they aren't where a predator can get to them. They have a nice coop/run area. :)

2-3 weeks i think maybe 1of the older 2 had been picking on it. i had noticed a red place on its side just above the wing but it seemed to be ok running around and eating good

I had 2 Ameraucana sister juvies and one was not growing. Eventually the bigger sister started picking on the littler one. The breeder had shipped them w/ worms and by the time she got back to my questions, the little one died. But the little one kept trying to behave normally by eating and drinking and running around all the time she was sick. I never expected a breeder to ship birds with worms. Dumb me expected a forthright breeder shipment so I wasn't aware to separate the smaller from the bigger pecking juvenile!

is 3 weeks to young to switch to starter/grower feed or do i need to wait for a little longer

Research some chick diet articles. There's so much info on BYC and online and that should help you decide what diet you want. I personally don't use SOY or GMO - organic only - which means I have to do a lot of extra protein food in pullet diets - mealworms, cooked/boiled eggs, cooked meat, NO-SOY kitten food (higher in protein than adult formulas), etc etc.
