I really wanted a splash silkie & was unable to find an adult so decided to purchase a splash 2 day old baby from the breeder I purchase all my silkies from. I have 3 silkie hens sitting on eggs so decided to try to put the baby under the most docile of the three. It was so cute when I went to tuck it under the hen it was peeping & my little hen brought her little beek around & nudged my hand gently as if to help get the baby tucked securely under her. It is now three days later & the baby is thriving ! Mommy silkie is teaching her to eat & drink. So cute & much better for me than raising her inside! Mom is still sitting on her eggs. She is busy! She has two active eggs under her today. They are peeping & pipping!

I had the same issue last spring when I had several Silkie babies..no matter how clean I kept the water, they would get it.. I tried adding ACV but it seemed to only work on about 50% of the chicks..I went to the little creek that runs through my farm and got a bucket of sand from the side and started throwing a pile in their brooder and never had an issue after that... I know that you can not use play sand or anything..if you dont have access to a creek you can buy grit for them..I have also started adding a large piece of sod in the brooders this year.. I just make a circle in the grass with the shovel , and put the entire piece- dirt and all in their brooder-- they pick at the small rocks and dirt in the sod and it works just like grit.

n last year (16 roo:2 hens) and recently rehomed all but 2 roos and now trying for more girls..lol.. I have 2 greys that are still in the brooder, a year old red hen and a year old buff hen..I have a black roo and a blue partridge roo..so basically any color would fit right in..Here is a pic of my 2 greys on their first day in the yard..
